David Dwight Burr

I regret that I could not attend David's memorial service at the Unitarian Universalist church today.

I first met David Burr when I arrived at Virginia Tech in 1971 as a new hire in the Department of History. In those first years he and Annette were hospitable and became my good friends. David was a stimulating thinker and writer. His dedication to seeking to understand the poor and poverty in the Catholic tradition was a constant reminder of the need for social justice. I admired his fulfillment of duties in our academic department and I came to understand his calm tackling of all the issues. Even after retirement David pursued the historical research that had so inspired him. He was a wise and good man.
