David A. Clapp, 66, of Cairo, NY, passed away peacefully at home on July 2, 2025. Born in Cedar Falls, Iowa on January 7, 1959, David was a man who truly embraced life with an adventurous spirit and unwavering love for his family.
David married his beloved wife Sheila (Skelly) Clapp in 1982, beginning a beautiful 43-year partnership filled with love, laughter, and shared adventures. Together they built a life centered on family, faith, and joy.
David began his career with John Deere before transitioning to telecommunications, where he dedicated 32 years of service to Mid-Hudson Cable. His colleagues remember him for his gentle and easy-going demeanor, qualities that made him a valued team member and friend.
A man of deep faith, David was an active member of Sacred Heart/Our Lady of Knock parish, where he served as a lector, eucharistic minister, and coordinator of altar servers. His commitment to his church community reflected his generous spirit and desire to serve others. David's compassionate nature extended to his special care for his brothers Bruce and Douglas, both intellectually disabled, and his work within the disabled community. His ability to see the best in all people inspired others and influenced his son Dylan's career path in social work.
David was known for his love of life, family, and adventure. When asked about a bucket list, he would proudly say he did everything he wanted to do. His early years were filled with remarkable adventures including skydiving, climbing Devils Tower, riding his bicycle from Iowa to Canada, motorcycle riding, cliff diving, gymnastics, and performing handstands on skateboards. In later years, he continued his adventurous spirit through skiing and fishing with his children, and most recently, paragliding in the Pacific Northwest. David's zest for life was infectious, and he was always up for a new adventure.
Above all, David's pride and joy was his family. He leaves behind his devoted wife Sheila; his sons Ryan David Clapp (married to Kathryn Rittweger) and Dylan Skelly Clapp; his cherished grandson Finnian Clapp, age 4; his father Neil G. Clapp; and his brothers Michael, Douglas, and Bruce, all of Iowa. David was predeceased by his son Steven Alan Clapp and his mother Mary Clapp.
David lived his life without regrets, embracing every moment and creating lasting memories with those he loved. His gentle spirit, adventurous heart, and deep devotion to family and faith will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday July 7, 2025 at 12 noon in Our Lady of Knock Shrine, 2052 NY-145, East Durham, NY 12423. Visitation will take place from 10 am to 12 noon at the Shrine. Burial will follow in the family plot of St. Patrick's Cemetery, Catskill, NY.
