David W. “12Volt Dave” Clews, 67, of Pottsville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at his home, surrounded by family.
He was born on October 31, 1957, in Pottsville, a son of the late Raymond H. and Patsy R. (Anderko) Clews.
Dave was a 1975 graduate of Pottsville Area High School.
He began his career as a sales manager at Hadesty’s in Pottsville and later became the owner of the former 12Volt Dave’s Audio, where he demonstrated his entrepreneurial spirit and passion for sound technology. He retired in 2024, leaving behind a legacy of excellence in the audio industry.
Dave was a member of United Presbyterian Church, Pottsville; the Yorkville Hose Fire Company; and the former Greenwood Hill Fire Company. He was also a former member of the Pottsville Lions Club, where he served as past president and was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Award. In addition, he served multiple terms as president of the Pottsville Business Association, helping to promote and support local commerce. He also served as former chairman and co-chairman of the Great Pottsville Cruise and was a proud two-time world champion in car audio competitions.
Dave lived a life marked by service, leadership, and a profound love for his family. He was actively involved in local governance, elected to the Pottsville City Council in 2019 and later serving as mayor beginning in 2021. His tenure was characterized by dedication to the community he loved. He resigned from his mayoral position on October 14, 2024, due to health concerns. Through his leadership, he sought to foster positive change and development within the city.
Dave was known as a loving father and grandfather. He treasured every moment spent with his family, particularly his grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Pappy 12Volt.” The joy he found in his family was unparalleled, providing him with deep purpose and fulfillment.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margie (Wagner) Clews, on December 1, 2017. Surviving are his children, Brooke Kuhlen and her husband, Michael, of Harleysville; and Jason Clews and his wife, Leah, of Pottsville; eight grandchildren, Katie, Lily, and Zoe Kuhlen; Maxwell, Hudson, Quincy, Wyatt, and Alora Clews; a sister, Linda Kerstetter and her husband, Don, of Harrisburg; along with nieces, cousins, and many friends.
