Dr. David P. Craig, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2025-a date that held special meaning, as it marked exactly 46 years since the day he first met the love of his life, Karen. Born on July 4, 1950, in Illinois to parents Carolyn J. and William P. Craig, David grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he developed the values of family, hard work, and quiet determination that guided him throughout his life.
David pursued his undergraduate studies in dentistry at The Ohio State University before proudly serving his country. He spent two years as an officer in the U.S. Army, stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, where he built lifelong memories and deepened his commitment to helping others. Upon returning home, he continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania, completing his specialty training in orthodontics.
In 1979, David moved to State College, Pennsylvania, and established the orthodontic practice that would define much of his professional life. He married Karen L. Vratarich in 1981, and together they welcomed their son, Gavin, in 1984. A year later, the family moved to a farm-a dream that became the foundation of countless cherished memories.
David never missed a ball game, whether cheering from the stands or supporting from the sidelines. He found joy in the simple pleasures: playing softball, restoring classic machines and cars, and connecting with the many people whose lives he touched. As an orthodontist, David treated patients from across the East Coast, including several notable Penn State athletes, earning a reputation for skill, kindness, and integrity.
After retiring from orthodontics in 2004, David and Karen embarked on new adventures, living in Bainbridge Island, Washington and Bradenton, Florida, before settling in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 2009. Never one to sit still, David spent 15 fulfilling years driving buses for WATA, where he became known for his reliability, warmth, and friendly conversation. In 2024, he and Karen moved once more-this time to Connecticut-to enjoy their final chapter together closer to family.
David was known by many names-Dad, Dee, Deema, Honey, Denise, David-and each reflected a different facet of the person so deeply loved. He had a gentle humor, a steadfast heart, and a gift for making everyone feel welcome.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Karen L. Craig; his son Gavin P. Craig and wife Stephanie A. Craig; and his adored grandchildren Gabriel, Hudson, Adelaide, Xavier, and Harper, who brought endless delight to his days. He is also survived by his loving sisters Shanda (Randy) Essell, Nancy (Duane) Gehring, and Cindy (Eric) Baker; his brothers-in-law John (Judi) Vratarich and Gary (Tammy) Vratarich; and his sister-in-law Susan (Dan) Hopkins, along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who held him dear.
David lived a life of commitment-to his family, his patients, his service, and to showing up with love. His legacy will continue to shape those who knew him, and his absence will be felt deeply.
