Dr. David Franklin D'Amico of Louisville, Kentucky passed away on October 17, 2024, at the age of 90. He died peacefully in his sleep after a prolonged illness.
Dr. D'Amico (or David) was born in La Plata, Argentina on September 5, 1934. He and his wife Ana Padalina D'Amico moved to the United States from Argentina in 1956. After being called into the ministry, David went back to school and graduated from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas in 1962. He went on to get his M.Div from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas and completed his education with a Ph.D.
David taught Church History at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; while he loved teaching, his call to God's work led him to travel along several interesting paths. Over the course of his career, he served on staff at South Main Baptist Church in Houston, Texas as a Minister to Internationals, directed the MNYBA mission association in New York City, and was appointed as the Billy Graham Chair of Evangelism at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.
Later in his career, David served as a representative of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship to the diplomatic community of the United Nations, again in New York City. Throughout a life dedicated to God's service, his call and direction were always to follow God's will and communicate the Gospel of Christ to as many people as possible.
David was a man of strong character and faith. He was diligent and kind. He compassionately prayed for others often, even in his later years. David was a life-long faithful steward of his time and resources and shared them generously and sacrificially with others.
David and his first wife Ana Padalina D'Amico were married in 1956 and had four children: Nancy Dorothy, Stephen David, Kenneth Daniel and David Edward. He loved opera, Dodgers baseball, soccer, silly Dad jokes and caring for his wife and children. He loved and cherished his wife Ana until her death in 2009 from cancer, and continued to bless his children and share in their joys and concerns until the end of his life.
David married Barbara Bogie Spaulding of Louisville, Kentucky, in November of 2011 and shared many joys of life with her and her extended family.
David was preceded in death by his first wife Ana Padalina D'Amico and 7 siblings: Humberto, Ruth, Elba, Samuel, Lidia, Emma, and Julieta.
He is survived by Barbara Bogie Spaulding of Louisville, Kentucky, as well as his children, Nancy D'Amico Nickles (Thomas) of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, Steve D'Amico (Ana Cora) of Mebane, North Carolina, Ken D'Amico of Raleigh, North Carolina and Dave D'Amico (Amee) of Smithfield, Kentucky, stepson Timothy Spaulding of Louisville, Kentucky and stepdaughter Linda Westerfield of Utica, Kentucky, and sister-in-law Alicia Padalina Hercz (Peter) of California. He is also survived by his five grandchildren: Stuart Benjamin D'Amico, Eric Thomas Nickles, David Lionel D'Amico, Elizabeth Ann D'Amico and John Kenneth D'Amico. He is also survived by a big family of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Memorial service will be held 4pm, Saturday, October 26, 2024, at Highland Baptist Church, 1101 Cherokee Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40204.
Visitation will be from 3pm to 4pm Saturday, prior to the service at the church.
David's wish was for his remains to be cremated. Spreading of the ashes will take place at the discretion of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Treyton Oak Towers Employee Christmas Fund, 211 West Oak Street, Louisville, Kentucky 40203; or Highland Baptist Church, 1101 Cherokee Road, Louisville Kentucky 40204.
