David “Dave” Leuthardt, passed away on July 21,2025, at the age of 65. Born on September 28, 1959, in Chokio, Minnesota, Dave lived a life marked by service, strength, and deep love for his family and community.
In 1978, Dave enlisted in the United States Army, where he served as a military police officer and trained police dogs until 1981. His dedication to public service continued when he joined the Porter County Sheriff’s Department in April 1983. Over the course of 21 years, Dave served in many roles including patrol sergeant, undercover officer, SWAT leader and negotiator, and ultimately, detective. Throughout his career, he received numerous awards for saving lives and making major arrests — a true reflection of his courage, skill, and commitment to protecting others.
Dave is survived by his son, Brandon Leuthardt (Emma), along with their three daughters: Ellery, Ruby, and Julia. He is also survived by his daughter, Amanda Marrero (Angel), and their two sons, Adriel and Takoda.
Known for his sharp wit and sarcastic humor, Dave could make anyone laugh, even in the toughest situations. His humor was clever and always timely — a signature part of who he was. Whether on the job or at home, Dave had a way of lightening the moment and keeping people grounded.
He will be remembered not only for his decades of service and bravery, but for the way he made people feel — safe, supported, and often smiling. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege to know him.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
