SALEM - David J. Edling, 81, passed away on November 14, 2025, at Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
Born on January 16, 1944 in
Salem, Ohio, Dave was the son of the late Samuel E. and Helen K. (Steck) Edling.
A proud lifelong resident of Salem, Dave was a graduate of Salem High School, Class of 1962. Dave left a lasting mark on the school's athletic program. As a standout running back on the football team and a competitive member of the track and field team, his talent on the field was undeniable. His athletic achievements were later recognized when he was honored with induction into the Salem High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. Dave's athletic journey continued with a football scholarship to Fairmont State University in West Virginia. An injury during his first season altered his path, leading him back to his hometown. Dave continued his education at Youngstown State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in business.
On November 13, 1965, Dave married the love of his life, Patricia "Pat" Sweitzer. Their 60 year union was one of unwavering commitment and love. Together, David and Pat created a home filled with love, laughter, and an abundance of cherished family memories.
Dave's professional life was a testament to his strong work ethic. For more than thirty years, he contributed his skills and expertise as a production control manager for NRM in Columbiana. He concluded his career at the company's McNeil & NRM, Inc. plant in Akron, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and leadership.
His passion for sports was a lifelong affair, one that he shared with his sons, David and Roger. Dave was not only their biggest supporter and fan, but also served as their coach in youth baseball and basketball leagues. Never missing a basketball game, Dave could be found on the court's sidelines videotaping the high school games for the team and community to watch on the local tv broadcasts on Sundays. As his sons and grandson became part of The Ohio State University family, they forged unforgettable memories cheering on the Buckeyes at football games.
Dave's engagement with the community extended beyond sports. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, the Salem Elks Lodge, and the Salem Italian American Club. His service on the Salem School Board, where he played a pivotal role in the remodeling of Reilly Stadium during his elected term, highlighted his commitment to local education.
With his beloved wife Pat, Dave spent the past 25 years enjoying winters in Lake Worth, Florida, where their son Roger resides. There, he enjoyed the sunshine while bicycling and the many fishing excursions with his son.
An all-around likeable and good guy, Dave never seemed to meet a stranger and his friendly demeanor and positivity left a lasting impact on everyone he met.
Dave leaves to carry on his memory, his wife, Pat; sons, David A. (Peggy) Edling of Columbus and Roger Edling of Florida; grandson, Max Edling of Columbus; brother, Jerry (Karen) Edling of Georgia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Dave was preceded in death by siblings, Ed, Art, and Richard Edling, and Sue Marino.
