David Lamar Elsberry, age 76 of Oxford, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 28, 2025. Born in Yorkville, Georgia, on October 8, 1948, he was the son of the late Ivey H. Elsberry and the late Myrtle Brady Elsberry.
David had a remarkable career of owning a family trucking company that has spanned over 40 years. He also held titles of Vice President of Operations for Superior Trucking and Taylormade Trucking. David was one of the first in the country to haul nuclear waste. He founded 3-D Transportation in 1990, ran it successfully until 2010 when he semi-retired, and turned the company over to his wife. That company, now named Twisted Chrome, is still in operation today. In his younger days, David worked for the Paulding County Sheriff's Office until the day he was shot. With his love of cars, he also owned a body shop for several years where he enjoyed painting and working on cars.
His love of cars afforded him a racing career that spanned over 50 years when he began drag racing in the 1960's. He was heavily involved in the development of fuel injection in drag racing application. He won 2nd place in the ADRL Championship Chase and clocked 200 miles per hour on the 1/8th and 1/4 mile passes. Not only did David race cars, but he was also the owner and operator of the Montgomery Raceway Park. The highlight of his racing career was setting ET and MPH records with the Lowmad. David was also an avid collector of street rods, muscle cars and motorcycles. He owned everything from a 1933 Chevy Mercury to a 1970 Chevy Chevelle. However, his favorite ride was a 1955 Chevy Belair 2 door post.
The one thing David was most proud of was his children and grandchildren. His sons have done well in their careers in the trucking industry. His grandchildren have also made him proud: his grandson has followed in his footsteps into the trucking industry, one granddaughter is a nurse and will complete her RN degree in the fall; and one granddaughter is an accomplished artist.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 35 years, Terri Ezzell Elsberry of Oxford; his sons and daughters-in-law, David L. Elsberry, II and Dava Patterson and Danny and Sherri Elsberry of Temple; his grandchildren: Michael D. (Katie Raines) Elsberry, Haley Elsberry, and Angel Elsberry; and one grandchild, William Raines. Also surviving are his sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Ronnie Rakestraw of Dallas; his brothers, Steve H. Elsberry of Dallas and Kevin Elsberry of Cartersville; a number of nieces and nephews; and his special fur babies, Tigger and Pooh Bear.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 30th, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Hutcheson's Memorial Chapel in Buchanan and on Wednesday, October 1st from 1:00 PM until the funeral hour at Corinth Baptist Church, 43 Rockmart Rd, Bremen, GA.
The funeral for David Elsberry will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at Corinth Baptist Church with Reverend Barry Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the Gentry Family Cemetery with Patty Hutcheson presiding. The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Steve Elsberry, Chris Elsberry, William Geiger, Gary Ensslin, Bobby Post, Zach Wilson, Joel Wilson, and Will Elsberry.
