Papa was the best Great Uncle anyone could ever have. The Lake will never be the same without him, and I am forever grateful for everything he has taught me as well as all of the amazing memories he has given me and all our family. He had the ability to instantly light up a room and put a smile on your face without even saying a word. It was always a pleasure to be in his company and I will never forget to "Be good and study hard." I wish you a happy journey Papa, and I can't help but smile when hearing your name. You will be missed more than you know.

Dave was a driving force during my life in VDOC. He will be missed. Lov ya mean it my friend

I never worked for Dave in the DOC, however, he was an advocate for me many years ago with a DOC matter and because of his knowledge and expertise of the DOC's procedures I will forever be grateful for his assistance. I enjoyed his candid thoughts and beliefs, and admired that he stood up for what is right even though it was not always politically correct per-se. May God bless and strengthen his family through these dark days.

David was a unique individual. If you worked at the DOC, you knew David either personally or by reputation. I think his re-do of the Bob Landon quote is perfect and also believe that doing the right thing sometimes trumps doing things right. You could close your eyes and hear David coming into a room. Full of energy, beliefs, opinions and love, he was really a person who tried to make a difference. He is gone too soon and his memory will live on forever. He followed his principles of what he believed was right and made many permanent changes to the state employees policies. I will always remember the Dave Garraghty HB 453 protecting employees fired at will and without cause. He made a difference. I'm sorry he didn't have a longer time enjoying his retirement. God Bless his soul. Bye for now, Dave. You did it dude. You made a difference for us all.

He stood behind his convictions and was never hesitant to stand up. His knowledge was limitless. I respected his drive to stick behind what he believed it.

I had the opportunity to serve under Daves supervision as Warden at Brunswick and Nottoway Correctional Centers and was given a lot of encouragement and conversations of wisdom. Know that you have a love one who was a man of words and wisdom and a great person. May God continue to strenghten you mentally,spiritualy and physically each and every day. My heartfelt condolences to all the family. I have many fond memories from growing up with David on Yorkshire St. Salem.

I offer my sincere condolences for the sad news of David's passing. I had the priviledge of working as his assistant warden at Nottoway Correctional Center from May 1985 until November 1992. He was an outstanding leader, teacher and friend. Best wishes as you begin to cope with this huge void in your lives.

Mr. Garraghty hired me in 1990 as a C/O
at Nottoway Correctional Center. He was a true visionary and always thought outside of the box. To know him was to respect and love him. He was a fair person and loyal person. He truly believed in fighting for what was right and being there for his employees. The world and Corrections are a better place because he lived and worked in them. May God bless his family and give them peace.

Mr. G - There were no others such as you! You were many things to many people - mentor, leader, co-worker, friend. Thank you for seeing the potential in me and providing me the opportunity to join the Corrections family many years ago. To your family, it is my hope and prayer that each of you will be comforted in knowing others share in your loss.

The majority of my career has been at Greensville and in that time Mr. Garraghty was a person who model the way before the phrase became popular. He knew everyone by their first names and when needed he would "JUMP RIGHT IN" (Greensville Knows). I am sorry that he is lost physically, but because he left a legacy of teaching and caring he will always still be a presence in minds and hearts.

Martha I am so sorry for you and your family's loss, may god grant you peace during your time of bereavement.

I grew up with Dave in Salem. Was very sad to hear of his passing. Preston I am sorry for your loss. Dave was a great guy, lots of fun to sit and talk with him at the station. Very knowledgeable, I know he will be greatly missed by all. My prayers and thoughts are with all of his family.

David and I were Friends 30 years ago, but I will always remember his smile and the work he was doing with Department of Corrections. He was a fine man. Condolences to his family.

I met David when I was 16 years old in Roanoke, VA and remained friends for 30 years. He was smart, gave advise freely, kind and could start a conversation with ease. I am truly sadden by his loss to his family and friends. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

He was a mentor, advisor, and leader to me in my career. His wisdom and leadership will always be remembered and appreciated.

To hear about the passing of Mr. Garraghty was shocking. I worked with him many years at Greensville Correctional Center. I could always count on him tell you just like it was. I have so many memories of him being the Chief Warden. Most of all he inspired me to be who I am today. He believed in me and always made sure I had to tools too perform my job. He was afraid of no one. He stood up for what he believed in. A great inspiration in my life. I have many gifts in my home that he gave to staff at GRCC. The Irish Prayer, the eagle,the clock and many others, just he was of letting us know we were appreciated.

I could go on and on. He was just a great person and always showed a concern for others. I will miss him but never forget him.

Dave Garraghty was a mentor, a coach, and a motivator in the field of corrections. I worked for him in the early 80's and he definitely left a mark on my career.
To his family, he was a great man and he will be missed by his family, friends and his corrections family. You will be kept close in prayer.

If Dave could read this message, he would ask, "Who in the world is Margaret Bowles?" :-) He and I didn't know each other personally but I have worked in the Virginia DOC many years and did attend some meetings/training sessions with him many years ago. What I especially liked about him was that he spoke his mind regardless of the "rank" of the person with whom he was talking. When "war stories" are being recalled, Dave Garraghty's name always comes up with a tale of something out of the ordinary that he either said or accomplished. My condolences to the family; so sorry for your loss.
