Dear Judy, Cutler and family I am so sorry to hear of David´s passing. Like many others I don´t think I have been able to fully process it yet. He was a great firefighter, EMT, person, husband, father and most of all friend. As you know, he was my first fulltime appointment to the Barre City Fire Department after I took over. I never regretted it for a minute. As his Chief I can say he was an extremely loyal and trustworthy member of my crew, he always did whatever he was told to do without question. Quite early on when he was still a call firefighter, we had an extremely serious fire in a 3-story commercial building on Main Street. I was by myself on the 3rd floor fire escape evacuating numerous residents with a very heavy smoke condition. I spotted David in the backyard and hollered to him that I needed some firefighters with airpacks to help evacuate. 3 or 4 minutes later I turned around and there was David with an airpack ready to go to work, and he told me there was no one else coming. I told David we had a handicapped young man who was still in his room. Against my better judgement and training, I told David to go in by himself and rescue the remaining occupant. I gave him the information where to find the guy and David set off down the dark smoky hallway. I kept hollering to give him something to lead him back out. A very long few minutes later I could hear him coming out with the guy coughing and hacking. That man would live another day due to one person, Firefighter David Gladding. David never let me forget how loud I hollered that morning (and some of the unrepeatable things I said). We had a great relationship and that rescue proved why: I trusted him and most of all he trusted me and that I would not let him get hurt. I would never do that, you see "he was one of my boys". Renee says it best our hearts are broken and we will never forget David.

I will never forget the many trips to Dunkin´ Donuts for coffee and then tea after every ambulance call no matter what time of day it was! Dave was a great friend and partner in the fire house! Rest in peace brother!

David joined our family when he married my cousin Judy. He was greatly loved by all of us, and I was so saddened to hear of his passing. Much love to Judy, Cutler, and the rest of the family. You will be greatly missed, David. Love you.

When I was in grade school at Websterville Baptist Christian School in Websterville VT, Dave was there almost every morning and he always made me feel special every time I saw him. I don´t think he ever knew how much that meant to me, but that was also one of the most special things about it, because he didn´t want any kind of recognition or praise, he just truly loved making people happy. I believe that is a very good representation of Dave´s character; humble, kind, and full of love for others. I will miss him very much and pray for his loved ones each and every day.

I remember a trip Dave and Judy made to California. We joined with our cousin Gail Eldridge to have dinner in Oakland. It was a fun night, there was a jar of Vietnamese snake wine displayed prominently above the bar. Food and company were great. Dave pointed out Jerry Brown (then Oakland mayor) was sitting at the next table. He was a definitely fun cousin who shall be missed! Trevor and I offer deepest condolences to Judy and Cutler.

Rest In Peace, our youngest Towne cousin. I will always think of you as a big ole´ "Vermont teddy bear in a tank top" with your twinkle in your eye, your genuine smile, your kind and sincere words for all and your great " bear hug!" May you be surrounded by plenty of Florida sunshine, clear blue skies & calm pond water, and Vermont green. Please know that there are many missing you and loving you. Judy and Cutler, please know that your family and friends are there for you sending love, hugs and prayers.
