David Grimsrud Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jun. 13, 2025.
David Lewis Grimsrud passed away peacefully on June 10 after enjoying one last ice cream sundae. A proud native of Superior, Wisconsin, Dave made his home in and around the Twin Cities for 50 years but never stopped longing for the big lake they call gichi-gami. He was a proud Army veteran and a perfect patriot who would fight for your right to burn the flag and then persuade you not to. He was a successful executive whose legendary work ethic and loyalty made him a trusted confidant and fixer for colleagues who respected and relied on him. He was funny in a goofy and irreverent way. He was a brilliant piano player and a fixture in the church choir. He was an avid hunter and expert marksman who came to love golf (though perhaps not putting). He was the foxhole guy that everyone needs. He was a writer and poet who loved to tinker with words and phrases, often mimicking the style of favorites Hemingway and Cummings. He was always friends with the bartender and always dismissive of the bigshot. He was dogs not cats, ice cream not vegetables, steak not fish and Elton John not Johnny Cash. He was a devout Catholic who loved the pageantry of mass and the mystery of faith. He was never late, never tired, never hopeless. He was a proud and protective brother and a loving husband. He was imperfect but charmingly so. He was a little boy who endured an exceptionally difficult childhood and nevertheless became a father who generously offered the unconditional love and protection that children need to thrive, and in doing so helped change the trajectory of his family for generations to come. This was a good man who made a difference and the peace that has come to him is well earned. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 20 at the Cathedral of Saint Paul, 239 Selby Ave, St Paul with visitation beginning 10:30 a.m. Details regarding a reception to follow the service are pending and a private burial will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery at a later date. Taking a moment to remember Dave is the best tribute, but if you wish to do something more please consider a donation to American Legion Post 111 or the Wounded Warrior Foundation.
