David Grunwald Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Pedersen Ryberg Funeral Home on Oct. 3, 2025.
David W. Grunwald, 70, the kind and most authentic man of Elmhurst, passed away peacefully on October 23, surrounded by his family. David was the beloved husband of Debbie (nee McNiff) for 42 years and the devoted son of the late Edmund and Lorraine Grunwald. He was a cherished brother to Cheryl (Frank) Ricchio, Gail (Wolf) Frey, Dawn (Ed) Hanrahan, and Laurie (Larry) Finn. He was also a beloved son-in-law to Joe and Nancy McNiff and a dear brother-in-law to Larry (Carmella) McNiff, Peggy (Jack) Polaski, and Suzy (Tim) Rogness. David was the fun and loving uncle to many nieces and nephews and was blessed with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and lifelong friends. An avid swimmer, David was a familiar face around the Elmhurst Courts and community, serving as an usher at Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church and volunteering with PADS. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, nature, gardening, and cooking, but his deepest passion was his family. Known for his humor, generosity, kindness, and strength, David brought laughter and joy to everyone he met. Raised among sisters, David became a master teaser early in life but was also their fiercest protector. He was the ultimate caregiver, lovingly supporting Debbie through health challenges and caring for his parents always. Despite a long work commute, David would stop by his parents or in-laws homes to help with tasks or bring a special treat. A hardworking and fun-loving man, he had an uncanny ability to make people laugh and was an endless jokester. David and Debbies love story began while working together at Borg-Warner in Franklin Park. He was retired from Branke Parts, Inc. in McHenry after 25 years. Through his unwavering faith, David was given strength and peace. In his honor, donations may be made to the ALS Association, Greater Chicago Chapter, at 5315 North Clark St., Unit 650, Chicago, IL 60640. [ALSUnitedChicago]https://alsunitedchicago.org/ Davids legacy of kindness, laughter, and love will forever impact those who knew him and the generations to come. We will miss him deeply and remember him always.
