Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at the age of 86. David was born on May 21, 1939, in Eaton Rapids, MI, the seventh of ten children born to Sidney and Alice (DeClercq) Hawkins. He was raised on the family farm in Aurelius Township, where he learned the value of hard work at a young age, rising before dawn to milk the cows and returning to the barn again after school.
David began his education in a one-room schoolhouse in Aurelius Township and later attended Eaton Rapids High School, where he excelled as a football player, graduating with the Class of 1958. On December 10, 1960, he married the love of his life, Pamela Jean Kohl, and together they built a life centered on family, and hard work, raising two children.
David began his career in construction before joining General Motors, where he worked for 28 years until his retirement. He had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, gardening, and cutting wood, his primary source of home heating until recent years. A talented athlete, he also pitched for the fast-pitch Dimond Rio softball team.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, David Hawkins Jr.; and siblings, Dale Hawkins, Dorine Kilburn, Paul Hawkins, Doris Williams, Mary Ellison, and John Hawkins.
David is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Pam Hawkins; daughter, Laurie (David) Hawkins-Greathouse; daughter-in-law, Lisa (Steve) Wade; grandchildren, Brian (Kelsey) Mullin Jr., Judson (Deanna) Mullin, Brandon (Michelle) Mullin, Kelsi Hawkins-Wade, Lacey Hawkins-Wade, Karlie Hawkins-Wade, and Vance Wade; great-grandchildren, Taylor Richardson, Jakob Mullin, Jayden Mullin, Scott Mullin, Levi Mullin, Willow Bisel, Jameson Bisel, and Athena Ott. He is also survived by his siblings, Pauline Royston, Audrey Hartenburg, and Sidney Hawkins Jr., as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
A memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and again from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
