David Lee Heggie, 92, of Gallatin, Tennessee, passed away on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, in Westmoreland, Tennessee. Born November 22, 1933, in Marion, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Grandon Lee Heggie and Adell Blackwell Heggie. David leaves behind a legacy rich in love, service, and unwavering support for his family.
As the oldest of 13 children, David embraced his role as a father figure not only to his three children—Cathy Bailey, Larry Heggie, and Gared Keith—but also to all of his younger siblings. He was a source of guidance and inspiration, nurturing the bonds that held his family together. David owned and operated Heggies Landscaping, a business through which he employed many family members, ensuring that they had food on the table and opportunities to thrive. His company undertook significant projects, including the leveling of the baseball field and the landscaping at First Horizon Park, home of the Nashville Sounds baseball team.
David's commitments extended beyond work; he was well known for his generous spirit. He regularly met with a close-knit group of men at Hardee's in Gallatin, where they shared laughter and camaraderie. An adept handyman, David had the remarkable ability to fix anything that was broken, a skill that was often called upon by those around him. His selflessness was evident through his countless acts of kindness, which included literally giving the shirt off his back to those in need. Despite the challenges life presented, David maintained a wonderful sense of humor right until the very end.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers William Norris Heggie, Billy Heggie, J.W. Heggie, James Heggie, and Grandon Heggie; sisters Deborah Kay Heggie, Martha Nell Heggie Hayes, and Nancy Gail Heggie Davidson.
David is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Margaret "Sue" Heggie; children Cathy (Dwight) Bailey, Larry (Debbie) Heggie, and Gared (Chris) Keith. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren Bill (Ashley) Lawrence, Beth (Brad) Beckley, Eric Heggie, and Erica (Eddie) Henley; great grandchildren Caden, Cole, Davis, Kobley, Carson, Tanner, Eddie, and Emma; brothers Joe (Barbara) Heggie, Tony (Marilyn) Heggie, and Jerry (Erica) Heggie; as well as his sister, Mary Ann Satterfield.
A visitation will be held on December 12, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service officiated by Dwight Bailey at 1:00 PM at Alexander Funeral Home & Cremation Center, located at 584 Nashville Pike, Gallatin, TN.
