David Owen Hendrickson returned to his heavenly home on July 1, 2025 in Layton, Utah. David was born on January 15, 1938 in Ogden, Utah to Dwain C. and Ferol Owens Hendrickson and his two older siblings, Richard “Dick” (Portia) Hendrickson and Patricia “Pat” (Denny) Williams.
David was full of enthusiasm, adventure, and pursued knowledge in all facets of life. At a young age he displayed boundless talents and skills. His father always said he was mechanically gifted. As a child, he rebuilt their old Chevrolet so he could drive it around their vacant lot. After graduating from Ogden High School in 1956, David served in the Hawaii, Honolulu Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He spoke of these fond memories throughout his life.
He married Sharon B. Housley on December 23, 1960 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Together they had four children, Tracie, the late Richard (Julie), Matthew (Michelle), and Joshua. It was at this time that he started his pursuit of dentistry. David attended Weber State College and received his B.S. degree from Brigham Young University. In 1966 he graduated from dental school at the University of Washington in Seattle. David started practicing dentistry alongside his dad in Ogden, Utah which would eventually turn into a practice of his own. Over the years, David and Sharon raised a beautiful family and made many happy memories together. He was a patient father who was great at teaching and trusting his kids as they learned new skills.
On March 9th, of 1990, David married Lori Carma Riddell, and joyfully embraced her daughter, Cortnee, as his own, before further growing his loving family with two more children, Taylor (Tiffani) and Jessica (Keaton). David held each of his seven children in the highest esteem, never missing a chance to remind them. David was well rounded and passed on his love for a variety of hobbies to his kids. He loved riding motorcycles, snowmobiling, skiing, or taking his boys hunting. He had his pilot license, loved to fly, and he loved taking family and friends boating. From building his very first boat in his parents’ garage to exploring Lake Powell, he delighted in teaching his kids to drive, to navigate unpredictability, and to find joy in the outdoors. Something about braving sudden storms on the water or navigating fierce winter snowstorms always left him with a confident smile and a playful twinkle in his eye.
Of all his hobbies and skills, David was perhaps most passionate about his dental practice. He was an excellent dentist and a master at cosmetic dentistry. He was known for his gentle approach and ability to make patients feel at ease. He was often heard in his office saying excitedly, “Don’t you just love this?”. He quietly donated his time and dentistry services, often after hours, to many in the community who were in need. His passion for caring for others and his patients filled him with deep joy. In 2009, David and Lori traveled to the Dominican Republic on a humanitarian dental effort, generously sharing his skills to serve those in need in that area. He practiced dentistry for 54 years before reluctantly retiring in 2020.
He was very patriotic, always speaking of how blessed we are to live in this country and during casual conversation he often would work in witty political comments to see if you were paying attention. With his great sense of humor and encyclopedic mind, David was always sharing captivating historical facts and fascinating tidbits. David had an incredible work ethic and an intellect larger than life, but above all else, he had a loving and genuine soul.
Known for his kindness and nurturing embrace, his presence was calming while effortlessly uplifting to those around him. He was an eternal optimist who could see the fun in any situation and find happiness even when things around him were going wrong. If you knew him, you loved him. He adored our Savior, his blended family, friends, and his patients. He will be missed by all that knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife Lori, 6 children, 19 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild.
David is preceded in death by his son Richard and granddaughter Sally; his sister Pat and her husband Denny; his brother Dick and his wife Portia; and his parents, Dwain and Ferol.
