HODGSON, DAVID WALTER, 90, Army Veteran, passed peacefully on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at Reed's Cove with his family by his side. Born on November 2, 1935, in
Iowa City, Iowa to Walter and Elaine (Bayard) Hodgson, David's life was one marked by curiosity, service, and a steadfast devotion to the people and causes he loved.
David spent his childhood in Denton, Texas, where he grew up, attended school, and graduated before setting his sights on higher education. He went on to attend the University of Texas, ultimately earning his doctorate in History-a subject he not only mastered but poured his heart into teaching for decades. College would bring him more than a degree; it was where he met the love of his life, Mary L. Bennett. They were married on August 19, 1960, and spent 58 years building a life filled with partnership, purpose, and family.
As a father, David was fully present. He was the kind of dad who showed up-who put in the hours, the miles, and the heart. His years as a Scout Leader for his sons were among his proudest chapters, where he nurtured responsibility, adventure, and character in each of them. His children always knew they were loved, supported, and encouraged to explore the world as he had.
Beyond his home, David was a man who believed in giving generously of his time and talents. His teaching career took him to the University of Texas, Ohio State University, and finally at Claflin College where he spent most of his career. Through teaching David touched countless lives with his passion for history and his genuine interest in people.
He was also a joiner in the best sense-someone who not only became part of an organization but stepped up to serve. Whether it was Mensa, Toastmasters, the Wise County Veterans, the Salvation Army as a bell ringer, working the election polls, or his long-standing commitment to Rotary, David brought sincerity and energy to every role. He proudly set up and ran Rotary's annual blood drive and was himself a loyal donor, offering several gallons over his lifetime. Helping others wasn't something he did occasionally-it was woven into who he was.
When he wasn't volunteering or teaching, David found joy in the outdoors. He loved hunting, camping, backpacking, and target shooting, and took great interest in gun collecting. He was deeply involved in many gun-related organizations, including the NRA as a lifetime member, serving as a founding member of the Pine Ridge Gun Club, and participating in both the Dallas Arms Collectors and NW Texas Field & Stream.
David was also a voracious reader who never met a stranger. He had a gift for conversation and could turn a chance meeting into a friendship-his mind always curious, his heart always open. His presence had a way of making people feel seen, valued, and welcome.
David is survived by his children: Linda Rials of Wingate, TX; Amy Hodgson-Smith of Wichita, KS; Richard Hodgson of Chapman, KS; John Hodgson of Duncan, OK; Thomas Hodgson of
Columbus, GA; and Terrell Hodgson of Aberdeen, NC. He leaves behind grandchildren Tom of Chapman, KS; Robert of Twenty-Nine Palms, CA; Aurora of Statesboro, GA; Alexander of Richmond, VA; Matt of Omaha, NE; Emily of Lawrence, KS; Lillie of Duncan, OK; Brady of Atlanta, GA; and Rhett of Decatur, TX; great-grandchildren McKenzie and Katie of Decatur, TX; great-great-grandchild Westin of Decatur, TX; and many extended family members and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Elaine; his beloved wife, Mary; his son, Jack McNair; grandson Rusty; and his brother, Richard C. Hodgson.
A graveside service will be held at the Kansas Veteran's Cemetery, 5181 Wildcat Creek Rd,
Manhattan, KS 66503 on ………………
David's life was defined by service, curiosity, and love. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the lessons he taught, and the family he cherished. Though he will be deeply missed, the stories, values, and kindness he shared will continue to shine through all who knew him.
