David Michael Holcombe, age 86, passed away peacefully at his home in Brevard, North Carolina, on Saturday, January 17.

David was born on May 7, 1939, in Weaverville, North Carolina, to Vaughn V. Holcombe and Thelma King Holcombe, both of whom preceded him in death. He made Brevard his home in 1966 when he began teaching at Brevard College. After leaving Brevard College in the early 1970s, David continued his lifelong vocation in education at Blue Ridge Community College, where he taught until his retirement.

A passionate and devoted teacher, David had a remarkable gift for bringing history to life. He loved sharing his knowledge and guiding students along the journey of learning. Known for his calm demeanor and thoughtful presence, he was a steady and peaceful voice for his students, colleagues, family, and friends.

David was a long time and dedicated member of First Baptist Church of Brevard, where he faithfully served as a Sunday school teacher for all age groups and as a deacon. His commitment to his faith and church community reflected the same patience, kindness, and wisdom that defined every aspect of his life.

He married his high school sweetheart, Irma Arrowood, and together they shared 66 years of marriage. David was a devoted and loving husband, cherishing the love of his life until the very end.

David was preceded in death by his brothers Vaughn Holcombe and Malcolm Holcombe; his daughter Deborah Lynn Holcombe; and his daughter in law Eleanor Holcombe, wife of Monty.

He is survived by his wife, Irma Holcombe; his sons, Monty Holcombe of Virginia and Michael Holcombe of Brevard; his daughter in law Karen Holcombe, wife of Michael; and his brother Anthony Holcombe. He is also survived by four beloved grandchildren: Deborah Holcombe of Delaware, Daniel Holcombe of Virginia, Drew Holcombe of Maryland, and Morgan Holcombe of Charlotte.

A doting grandfather, David attended as many recitals, performances, and events as he was able, offering quiet encouragement and pride. Beyond teaching and faith, he was a committed collector of antique toys, delighting in the thrill of the hunt and the joy of restoring old treasures to their former glory.

David will be remembered as a calm voice of reason, a gentle and guiding presence, a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, a faithful servant of his church, and an educator whose passion touched countless lives.

There will be no memorial service at this time.In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the First Baptist Church of Brevard Youth Program or to FourSeasonsCare.org.
