David and Jan Metzig were called back to the Lord on March 18, 2023 at the ages of 72 and 71.
David was born in Oshkosh on June 16, 1950, to the late Quintin and Kathryn Jeanne (Mosson) Metzig. Jan was born in New York on September 23, 1951, to the late James and Muriel (Sandon) Tyrrell.
David and Jan met at Valparaiso University in Indiana, where he earned an accounting degree and she earned a biology degree. On June 9, 1973, they married.
In 1980, David and Jan moved to Zittau and became the third generation of Metzigs to own and operate the Union Star Cheese Factory. They raised their five sons in a home above the factory, which became a cherished gathering spot for extended family and friends. The Union Star employees, customers and farmers were also considered family.
In addition to cheesemaking, David enjoyed hunting, gardening and projects at the farm. Jan loved cooking, beekeeping, hosting and taking care of her boys. Their love of the Lord, commitment to family and a spirit of service defined their 49-year marriage. Together, they adored their children, daughters-in-law and grandchildren. They nurtured a strong faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, continuously studying the word and attending Calvary Bible Church.
David and Jan are survived by five sons, Charles (Brittany) Metzig, Louis Metzig, Matthew (Andrea) Metzig, Jonathan (Kelsey) Metzig, and Erik Metzig; seven grandchildren, August, Henry, Asher, Addison, Quintin, Isabel, and Thomas; David's three sisters, Karen (Fred) Roed, Susan (David) Elbing, and Kathryn (Curt) Radford; David's two brothers, Peter Metzig and Daniel (Marianne) Metzig; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends. They were preceded in death by Jan's brother, Richard Tyrrell.
A memorial visitation will take place Friday, March 24 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Calvary Bible Church, 1450 Oakridge Rd., Neenah. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday, March 25, from 1 to 3 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life service at 3 p.m. Pastor Keith Doyle will officiate. Interment will take place in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery in Larsen. Memorials may be directed to Prison Fellowship, Fox Cities Victim Crisis Response Team and Calvary Bible Church.
David and Jan's family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department as well as the Volunteer Crisis Response Team for the compassion, service, and guidance they provided during this tragic time.

Thinking of Jan, Dave and the Metzig Family. If I remember right today would have been their 50th anniversary. Faithfully, we can find solace that they continue to celebrate together. Thoughts and prayers to all of you.

We were deeply saddened to learn of their passing. As I was reading the beautifully written obituary, I discovered that I had attended Valparaiso University ("Valpo") at the same time David and Jan were there in the early 1970's. It's possible our paths may have crossed those 50 years ago and that would have made for some great conversation during the many times we were standing in line to purchase cheese curds. I have attached some photos of David and Jan from the various Valpo yearbooks.

We stopped and watched David Metzig crafting cheese. He was kind enough to take the time to answer our questions and show us some of his techniques, since we had a family cow and were experimenting with cheese making ourselves. We sampled his delicious cheese and bought some then and on several trips to the Union Star Cheese Factory through the years. His death will affect so many people who worked there, supplied milk to him, and those who enjoyed stopping to get fresh curds and other cheese products that were available for sale. It is so sad the David & Jan lives were cut short in this way. May they live this day in peace, may their home be with God in Zion with Mary, Mother of God, with Joseph, and all the Angels and Saints. May they return to their Creator, Who formed them from dust of the earth, and may they see their Redeemer, face to face. May God have mercy on their souls. Please pray for them and all who may need mercy at this sad time. Amen! TR
