David Long Obituary

David Russell Long, 63, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, November 9, 2025; "Russ Long" the incredibly talented maestro of the piano and entertainer; Beloved husband of Daniel Fisher; Dearest brother-in-law of Anita Kupczak, Carla (John) Kraft, Michael (Kathy) Fisher; Loving nephew of Michael (Kelly) Kauss; Proud uncle of Brandon (Kerry) Kupczak, Valerie Kupczak, Stephanie Kraft (Chris Dion), Aubrey (Mark) Alkire; Great-uncle of Aria Alkire, Annika Kupczak, Matthew Ross and Alexis Ross; Cherished longtime friend of Loretta Holloway, Carey and Patti Chickerneo and family; Russ is also survived by his beloved pets Felix and Zia and countless loving friends and fans.
Beginning at age 4, Russ had a natural God given talent on the piano. He began by memorizing hymns from his Grandmother's church and then returning home, he would play them from memory. He went on from here to play at churches, while still a young child and performing in various locations and events. Before graduating high school, Russ won the Van Cliburn competition and then moved on to study at the Cincinnati Conservatory. When he left Cincinnati, he worked at many different venues and events in Chicago including touring on cruise ships and playing for thousands of travelers. He also traveled the globe playing many venues. He told many stories of his time at Nick's Fishmarket and the Pump Room in Chicago and celebrities he met there, as well as his time at Teatro Zinzanni and the ability to play with first class performers to create a tremendous show; these were just a few of the places he was able to perform. But there was one part of his career that he was particularly happy with and that was the time he spent in churches playing for services, teaching choir, and even teaching children. Russ had a very close relationship with our Lord, and he relied on this relationship to help him through difficult and troubling times. One particular item through his career that brought him the greatest joy and happiness was his CD that he created titled "You'll Never Walk Alone." This title was inspired by his love for God and knowing that He would always be with him.
None of Russ's career was easy for him as one may imagine. He had serious health issues along the way, in particular dealing with his Osteogenesis Imperfecta (the brittle bone disease). He did not let that stand in his way, but he courageously moved forward always so happy to be on stage and performing for people. He was a master of the piano and could add notes and embellishment to any song to make it come alive. He will be missed and forever loved by all those he came in contact with through his life.
