David Mack Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hallowell & James Funeral Home - Countryside on Feb. 27, 2026.
David W. Mack, age 89, passed away on Monday, February 23rd, 2026, shortly after midnight with family by his side. David was the son of Aloysius and Clara Mack, and father of David, Paul, and Nolan, and grandfather of 7. He was the brother of the late Barbara (the late Joe) Ferrari, Sue (the late Ed) Walschlager, the late James (Sandy) Mack, the late Richard Mack, and the late Lois (the late George) McDonald. Born in Freeport, Iowa, in 1936, David's family moved to Chicago, IL shortly after, where he was raised Catholic.

David served in the US Army at Ft. Leonard Wood during peacetime in the late 1950s. He attended the University of Illinois in Champaign, where he obtained a bachelors degree and a masters in geology. In 1974, David moved to the Chicago suburb of LaGrange with his then-wife Evi, and later lived in Lyons, and Indian Head Park. He worked for the Department of Housing and Urban Development until 1998 and moonlit writing columns for the Chicago Sun-Times and the Condo Lifestyles magazine.

David loved strumming his ukulele, driving manual-transmission cars, exercising, and spending time with his family. He relished making puns, did standup comedy in his earlier years, and even sold a few jokes to comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield. Getting a Dunkin iced coffee, going to the park with his grandchildren, and Friday-night Mexican restaurant outings were some of his favorite activities in his later years. David enjoyed socializing and could frequently be found sitting on his balcony and chatting with passing neighbors. He root root rooted for his favorite baseball team, the Cubbies.

David leaves behind a legacy of quiet strength, unwavering love, and the kind of wisdom that will guide us long after his passing. He was happiest surrounded by those he loved, and that love will forever surround us.

Visitation is at the Hallowell & James Funeral Home at 1025 W. 55th St, Countryside, IL 60525, on Saturday, March 7, 2026, from 12-3PM, followed by a memorial service from 3-4PM, and dinner to follow at 4:30PM. In lieu of gifts, please make a donation to your favorite charity.
