David MacKay Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Colonial Funeral Home & Crematory on Mar. 30, 2026.
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of David Albert MacKay, a devoted husband, loving father, and cherished grandfather, who left us peacefully surrounded by his family on March 26, 2026, at the age of 85. He was born on December 12, 1940, in Newton, North Carolina to his parents, Basil and Edith (Hamil) MacKay.

David proudly served in the United States Army from 1963 to 1969, a testament to his commitment to his country. He married the love of his life, Donna, on December 26, 1964, in Thamesville, Ontario, Canada. Together, they created a beautiful life filled with cherished memories over their remarkable 61 years of marriage.

For over 60 years, they called Wonder Lake, IL, their home, where David became well-known in the community. He initially worked as a TV repairman for 20 years, a job that brought him closer to many families in the area. David later pursued further education, earning an associate degree, and transitioned into a successful career in sales before acquiring his real estate and broker licenses. David was adventurous and had a playful sense of humor. He enjoyed traveling and spending winters with his wife in Florida with the many friends they made from around the world. He loved his time with his family whether it be for Sunday Dinner or Family Vacations. He did things his way, including choosing to spend the last week of his life with his family and friends and no regrets.

He is survived by his wife: Donna (McQuarrie) MacKay; his children: Deborah Owen and Douglas (Laurie) MacKay; his grandchildren: Taylor, Joshua, and Ella; and several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings: Marvin, Walter, Audrey, and Robert.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at Colonial Funeral Home in McHenry, IL from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Military Funeral Honors will begin at 6:30 PM.
