David Martin

1939 - 2025

David A. Martin, born Bassett Virginia February 8, 1939, passed peacefully on August 29, 2025 in Fayetteville, NC.

David began his military career by serving in the United States Navy for six years as a submariner before proudly joining the United States Army in 1962. His distinguished service included tenures in the Special Forces in Vietnam, Okinawa and Ft. Bragg. He served bravely and received several Purple Hearts during his military service. David wore his Green Beret with pride and retired in 1988 at the rank of Sergeant Major.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Linwood Downey Martin and Alene Larson, née Martin, as well as his brothers, Dwight and Douglas Martin. David is survived by his oldest children, Linda Miller Freeman, née Martin, and Timothy Mark Miller, né Martin, children of his first wife, the late Elizabeth Anne Miller, née Vestal, married in 1957, divorced in 1961. He is also survived by his second wife, Irene Martin married in 1966; and his younger children, Stephanie Wiley, née Martin, and Sandra Bumgarner, née Martin. Additionally David is survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at 2 p.m. at Sullivan's Highland Funeral Service & Crematory. The family will receive friends prior from 12-2 p.m. in the chapel. A private burial will be held at a later date at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery.
