Our beloved father David McCullar Jr. passed away peacefully in his house on July 7,2023, surrounded by his family, and caretakers. He succumbed to congested heart failure, and renal failure, at the age of 92 years old.
In 1945 David moved to Hattiesburg, MS where he met and married Bessie McCullar. He was born in Greenville, MS on January 1, 1931 to the late Rev Dave McCullar Sr. and Carrie McCullar where he grew up working on a farm and running lawn services.
He moved to Hattiesburg, MS in 1948 where he met the love of his life Bessie Lee Travis. They married on December 25, 1955; until her death in 2019. He exhibited excellent husband ship, friendship, kinship, and his love for God was unimaginable. He had the greatest love for his family, and it showed in everything that he did for his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Throughout his life he had many experiences; including working at Hood Lumber Company as a laborer; he was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in
Hattiesburg, MS as a 33 degree mason. He was very active in the civil rights movement where he marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rev Jessie Jackson, for African Americans in Mississippi.
He is survived by 7 children: Mary Louise Spencer (Hattiesburg, MS), Dennis Lee (Gulfport, MS), Daisy Lee McCullar (Hattiesburg, MS), Larry McCullar (Hattiesburg, MS), Joyce Smith (Prosper, TX), Dave McCullar (Greenville, MS), Billie McCullar (Milwaukee, WI); 20 grandchildren: Messilina Billings (Birmingham, AL), Sabrina Lee (Birmingham, AL), Jennifer Cooper (Chicago, IL), Marlena Luckett (Ocean Spring, MS), Salem McCullar (Mansfield, TX), Christopher Clayton (Kingwood, TX), Marcey Barnes (Spring, TX), Dennis Lee Jr. (Gulfport, MS), Latasha Jefferson (Memphis, TN), Gorgette McCullar (Nashville, TN), and a host of 20 great
grandchildren: along with a host of nieces and nephews.
He's preceded in death by his wife ( Bessie McCullar); son (George Lee McCullar); daughter (Patricia McCullar): parents (Rev David McCullar and Carrie McCullar); two sisters (Mae Lee Sanders and Bertha McCullar); brother ( Jessie McCullar); three grandsons ( Antonio McCullar, Roderick Lee, and Marcus Lee); and granddaughter (Jocelynn White).
