I met Dave around 2012 when I was a CNA/PCT in a hospital he was a patient in. When possible we talked long and deeply about our faith. I never forgot him. We became friends on social media where in 2013 he wrote me a message about the man I was dating, he was advising me to find a Godly man that would take care of me & lead me well. I printed that message and put it in my Bible. Every now and then I would take it out and read it again. He was very astute because that man I was dating let me down at the most vulnerable time in my life. Tonight I pulled that printed message out of my Bible again and decided to look Dave up online to see how he was doing. I was so saddened to see his obituary online. I was always hoping I would be in a position to buy some of his work one day. Our meeting for a few days in 2013 and the subsequent note he wrote affected me in a profound way & I hoped we would one day meet again to have another deep conversation. I know he is in Heaven. May he rest in divine peace.

David and I were friends since the sixth grade. We went to separate universities. At UTAustin David had a profound spiritual experience that changed his life forever. All the while, he kept his gift of wit and artistic talent - a profoundly sympathetic man whose conversation was always a delight. I will miss him.

In my quest for "Little Taos Woof" I landed on Dave Merrick's obituary. The world has lost a gifted artist.
I purchased "Indigo" in 1998 to hang in the family room of our new home. We have moved 4 times since then and in every home "Indigo" hangs in a place of honor watching over the family room. Rest Easy Mr. Merrick. I will treasure my "Indigo" forever. My sincere condolences to The Merrick Family and all who loved Mr. Merrick.
My quest for "Little Taos Wolf" continues...

Indigo touched my soul and sadly was stolen from my home. Dave Merrick was an amazing artist that no one could touch. He is missed. His work was amazing. Prayers to his family and friends.

What a beautiful obituary. I just found a huge wooden enamel of INDIGO. Wanting to know the history I looked up his name and found this beautiful life story. Thank you, I will cherish my new INDIGO even more. Do you want me to do you a favor?

I met "Big Dave" in 1978, and he quickly became my best friend for decades. He had a heart for the lost which ultimately became focused on people lost in the cults by the early 80's. His quick wit and sense of humor was a constant encouragement to me, and his ability to compose a parody of a song "off the cuff" was absolutely amazing. His artistic abilities were stunning, and his help with transforming my "people skills of a great white shark" into "people skills of a dolphin" are appreciated.
I will miss my big buddy... there really isn't anyone who can take his place.

I have had the great pleasure of knowing Dave for some 40 years or so. He had a lovely little studio down the block from my little family business here in CS. I was fortunate to see a few pieces of art come to life. In 2003, I unfortunately became seriously ill. Dave came to see me in the ICU, but I was unconscious and my family had stepped out for lunch. When they returned, the ICU nurses told them a large man came to see me, stood at the end of my bed with his hat in his hand and just cried. At the description of a large man, they looked at each other and exclaimed 'DAVE!'. Rest easy big guy. A large man indeed with a heart to match. You will be surly missed by this girl <3

In the late 90s, I was working on a suspense novel. I lived in Michigan most of my life. I walked into an art gallery one day and saw a large print of a wolf and had to have it. I named it 'Wolfie', had it matted & framed, and took it home to my office. Wolfie was my constant creative companion. In 2000, I moved to Colorado. Not long after, I accompanied a friend to a doctor's appointment in Canon City, CO. While in the waiting room, I picked up the local newspaper and on the front page saw my painting and a story about David. I was shocked. Here? 30 miles from my new home? I immediately contacted David, told him my story and he agreed to paint a portrait for the cover of my novel. Now, knowing my beloved wolf portrait was Indigo, I named David's subject for my book cover, 'Wolfie.' They are, and have been since, happily side-by-side in my office, ever since. David was a kind-hearted, sensitive and delightful man. He will be missed. I am quite certain he will be painting the skies of Heaven for eternity. Rest In Peace, my friend. --Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.

He designed a picture that was to go on the church bulletin. I didn't know he had done it, or that he drew at all at the time. I had the bulletin in my hand, and showed it to him, asking him if he thought it was as incredible as I did. He was so surprised that I thought it was good, and then told me that he had drawn it. It was a scene of the second coming, with many horses leading the way. Absolutely breathtaking it was. I'll never forget that picture. I'll never forget Dave.

We met at church in 1976 and immediately connected and laughed together a lot. The church had a long stairway outside that led to the front door. We jokingly walked and danced up and down those steps imitating a Fred Astaire routine.

I bought an album of this incredible English Church Choral music. I played some of it for Dave. He said smiling, that's the kind of music that C.S. Lewis listened to.
