DAVID LEO MONAHAN HAMPTON, NH -- David Leo Monahan, age 75, passed away after an extended period of declining health in the early morning hours of March 20, 2020 in Hampton, New Hampshire where he had resided for the past 9 years near family. He was born November 12, 1944 at the Morrison Hospital in Whitefield, NH to Helen Pearl Ingerson (d. 1999) and Leo John Monahan (d. 2004). David graduated from Whitefield High School in the class of 1962. He received an associate degree in accounting from Pierce Business College. During summers, he was both a caddie and a lifeguard at The Mountain View Inn where he met his wife, Donna Radsky of Berlin, NH, with whom he had two daughters. He began working at the Whitefield Savings Bank as a teller in 1964 and later as bookkeeping manager until 1978 when he became the administrator of the Morrison Nursing Home where he worked until 1986. While raising his family in the 1970's and early 80's he was an active and respected community member in his hometown. David was a member of the Whitefield Lions Club, Volunteer Fire Department, served as treasurer for both the Town of Whitefield and the Whitefield Fire District, was a member of the Board of Directors of the Morrison Hospital, and a board member of the White Mountain Regional School District from 1976-1986. He was known for his intelligence, pragmatism, quick wit and disinclination to leave Whitefield. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and a good game of broom ball and horseshoes with his friends. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it and was strongly loyal to his friends. David instilled the values of hard work, responsibility, and good humor in his daughters. David is survived by his two daughters Kelley Stafford of Stowe, Vermont and Molly Harrigan of York, Maine. Sons-in-law Robert Stafford and Thomas Harrigan, and grandchildren Riley, Sarah, Rose and Rachel Stafford, and Alex and Grady Harrigan. He also leaves a brother, Michael J. Monahan and his wife Carol, of Houston Texas, a nephew Joel Monahan and his wife Summer and children Calla and Cash and nephew Chase Monahan. David's family is profoundly grateful to the staff at Genesis Oceanside Center and Compassus Hospice and Palliative Care for the care they have provided him over the years and their appreciation of his sharp wit and good heart. Services will be held at a later date and are in the care of Pillsbury Phaneuf Funeral Home in Littleton, NH. Until that time, David's family would gratefully welcome any happy memories people may wish to share online at www.pillsburyphaneuf.com.

Two years ago today, the world lost a kind and gentle soul and a true and loyal friend to many. Mike, Molly, Kelley and extended families, please know that he in his younger days was a vibrant and active member of the Whitefield community and left a lasting impression. He and his family made my growing-up years a lot happier and appreciative of true friendship. R.I.P. buddy--catch up with you soon...

Kelley, Molly and extended families,
Dave and I were close life-long friends and across-the-street neighbors from elementary school on. We enjoyed many adventures (and some mis-adventures, too) through the years. His parents, maternal grand-parents and the Florio families always welcomed me as family. I fondly remember joining them in the 7th grade as a country bumpkin on a week-end trip to Brooklyn for Easter to visit Aunt Mary and Uncle Joe--along with many games of croquet, week-long Monopoly games, and singing along with no talent but great fan enthusiasm to his many Kingston Trio albums. He was also an integral part of our wedding 56 years ago (and Donna, a fellow UNH alum, were friends as well). We moved to Dover, but always visited when in Whitefield (we had to, since he claimed he would get a nose-bleed if he went below the notch to visit us). We also touched base during the 30+ years of nursing homes--and now he has been enjoying eternal rest for a year. I still miss him terribly! RIP good and faithful friend...

David Monahan is an indelible part of my childhood and my early and middle years. We were fast friends, tightly bonded. We shared our secrets, our desires, and our troubles with each other. I choose to remember David and I as kids, cresting the second hill on Elm Street, and watching as Skippy, David's dog streaked to the two of us, and how David rewarded him with hugs. I choose to remember so many times when we, dressed in our best clothes and headed up the field behind David's home, to a high school dance. We would shovel the "patties' that David's grandfather's donkey had left, into the scuttle, stepping gingerly as we snuck a cigarette or two. And later on, when I was at college, and David sent a letter with one sentence to me. "Get me a ticket; I'll be there," and we, together watched our idols, The Kingston Trio play songs we had internalized and memorized. How many years did we plot and plan our escapades in David's room listening to "them cultured 'billies." And of course, our overnighters as Boy Scouts, and one memorable night at David's father's camp, nestled in the middle of some white pines--"the boys" assembled for some serious telling of tales, and adventures. And finally, how appropriate the photograph above is--how it shows David's love of the natural world. So many times, he and I fished The Carroll Stream, or walked the tracks out of town to fish on the river than runs through it--when David reached to take off some "crud" on the hook, only to grab onto an eel that wound around his arm, and scared us both senseless, and then, after we'd calmed down, that high pitched laugh that came from deep inside him. I choose to remember David with those and so many other memories. Rest in peace David and thank you for your friendship.
