Obituary published on Legacy.com by Broussard's Mortuary - Winnie on Jan. 15, 2026.
David Herbert Murrell, 71, of Winnie, died Wednesday, January 14, 2026. He was born to Lucy Felter Leger and Joseph Wayne Murrell on January 21, 1954, in Winshire.

David attended East Chambers and graduated in 1972. After high school, he attended Texas A&M University where he met his wife, Dina, farmed with his dad during the summers, then went on to earn his degree in Agronomy in 1976.

After completing college, he moved back to Winnie to start a family and farm full-time as a third-generation farmer. In 1977, he put his first crop in the ground. His dad, brother and he farmed rice and soybeans for many years and ran a small cattle operation. David continued to farm until 2020 when he retired.

David was married to Dina for 47 years and had two daughters together, Amanda and Megan, and four grandchildren. David enjoyed watching his grandkids play sports and was one of their biggest fans.

David was an active member of the Texas Rice Festival and served the board for many years where he served as TRF President in 1998 and was honored to be pioneer farmer of the year in 2023. In the past he was heavily involved in serving many organizational boards in the community including Little Dribblers, East Chambers Ex Student Organization, Chambers County Farm Bureau, Winnie-Stowell Noon Optimist Club, Chambers County Appraisal District, East Chambers Ag Youth Committee and Chambers County ESD1. Over the years, David was a faithful servant of our well-loved community where he had done countless fish fries, chili, and gumbo dinners for various organizations.

Survivors include wife, Dina Murrell; daughters, Amanda Hopson and Megan Morrison and her husband, Bryan; grandchildren, JW Hopson, Ty Hopson, Brantley Morrison, and Myles Morrison, all of Winnie; siblings, Susan Murrell of The Villages, Florida; Mike Murrell of Sour Lake; and Edward Murrell, of Winnie.

He is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Charles Murrell, Louis Murrell, and Ronald Murrell.
