David (Dave) A. Ouellette, Sr, 88, of Kalamazoo, passed away peacefully on March 7th, 2026. David was born on June 12, 1937 in Wyandotte, Michigan to Albert S. and Esther M. Ouellette (McCullough).

A life-long learner, David proudly earned bachelor’s and specialist degrees from Eastern Michigan University and a master’s degree from the University of Michigan. Following his graduation, he served proudly in the United States Army as an officer, completing his duty having obtained the rank of Captain.

As a passionate educator, David’s career began with teaching history then he worked his way up to administration, including ten years in the 1970’s at Lakeview High School in Battle Creek, Michigan. Ultimately, he ended his career as a professor at Olivet College, while also presenting workshops developing best practices in teaching across Michigan. David was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying backpacking and camping, often taking his family along on trips to many state and national parks. The family is thankful he gifted us with the awe of nature. He also enjoyed running for many years, even fulfilling his desire to complete two marathons. He was a passionate history enthusiast, devouring many books on the subject, a fervent baseball fanatic, and an eager participant in many community theater performances. A devoted advocate to end hunger and assist the poor, David organized and participated in many events and fundraisers for these causes throughout his life.

David was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law Kris Koop Ouellette. He is survived by his loving children David Ouellette, Jr, (Kristin), Sherri Crane (Gordon), Steven Ouellette; his step-children Nicole Bonine (Mike), Adrian Copeland (Martin), and Andrew Witter; his granddaughters Sarah Ouellette and Erin Ouellette. He is also survived by his fiance, Judy Bloomfield of Kalamazoo.

Per David’s wishes, no services are planned. Donations in honor of his life may be made to the nonprofit organization, The American Friends Service Committee at https://afsc.org/
