David Plowden age 85, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family.
David was the youngest of six children born to Elijah and Emma Cubbage Plowden on June 23,1939. As an infant, David lost his mother, and his father never remarried but raised all six of the children on their farm. During these challenging times, David's young life was defined by hard work, resilience, and a deep love for his family. After completing an eighth-grade education in Manning, SC, and being the youngest at home, David left school to assist his father as a full-time farmer.
At the age of 17, David left Manning in search of a better life. He briefly lived in Lancaster, PA, where two of his older brothers resided, but soon discovered that the cold climate was not for him. He eventually migrated to Miami, FL where his oldest sister resided, thus settling in the Coconut Grove area.
David began his career as a construction worker and later became a full-time employee with the City of Coral Gables. Over the next 33 years, David worked as a truck driver and crane operator. He retired at a young age, as a respected and dedicated crane operator for the City of Coral Gables.
David was married to the love of his life, Dorothy McKnight Plowden for 64 wonderful years. Together they built a legacy of love, devotion, and inspiration for all those around them. David was an avid guitarist and musician, enjoyed outdoor activities, traveled back and forth from Miami to Manning for vacations, and spent quality time with family and friends. His kindness, strength and unwavering dedication to his loved ones will forever be remembered. His laughter will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
David is survived by his beloved wife Dorothy; his three children: Emma (Speedy) Plowden-Thompson, Warren (JD) Plowden, and Vicki Plowden; his grandchildren: Shakkia (Kia) Plowden-Jones, Khadija (DeeDee) Plowden-Nelson; and his great-grandchildren: Jayla Jones, Aondray (AJ) Jones, Jalia Jones, Kamari Wilson, John (John-John) Marshall, and Dream Nelson; his brother Johnnie Plowden (Johnny) and a host of other relatives, and friends.
David's siblings: Sarah Plowden-McCray, James Plowden, Mary Plowden-Brown, Rufus Plowden, also preceded him in death.
