David Powe Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Eastgate Funeral Home - Garland on Jan. 27, 2026.
David Irwin Powe (Dave) was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on August 26, 1940. He passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026, while watching Gilmore Girls, one of his favorite TV shows. He lived a full, adventurous 85 years. He was devoted to God and his Baptist faith.

Dave is survived by his daughter Margie; his son Michael (Suzannah); and his grandsons, Neo and Myles. He also leaves behind many other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

Dave was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He cared for his first wife, Barbara, when she became terminally ill after they divorced. He also cherished his second wife, Diane, and cared for her even as his own health was failing. He was a proud father and took great joy in spoiling his grandkids.

In earlier years, he worked as a cab driver. While the job had its ups and downs, he truly enjoyed all the people he got to meet while driving a cab. He loved reminiscing about his cab-driving days and the adventures he had during that time.

He was also a skilled salesman, known for selling a variety of things over the years – VHS movies, talking balloons, sunglasses, Dallas Cowboys memorabilia, political swag, and herbal supplements, among other things. He eventually landed a job at Betsy Ross Flag Girls, where he developed a passion for selling flags. Dave worked for Betsy Ross until he retired in 2021 and was often recognized for being the top salesman in the company. Dave had a knack for connecting with others and his generous character shined through - endearing people to him and enabling him to form long-lasting relationships with customers. He wasn't making sales; he was developing friendships. Even long after he retired, he received calls from customers who wanted to know how he was doing or to see if, by chance, he was back in the sales business. If his health hadn't declined, it is doubtful he would have retired because he loved his job and the people so much. He even made a couple of sales from his hospital bed before he officially retired.

Some of his favorite things included road trips, Westerns, football, golf, Jeopardy!, Wheel of Fortune, Gilmore Girls, The West Wing, NCIS, Monk, SpongeBob, The Grinch, NASCAR, Willie Nelson, Die Hard, and The Godfather. He was an avid reader with a personal library ranging
from fiction to motivational to religious books.

Although he would deny these allegations, he truly enjoyed caring for people. He looked after the people he loved, but his care for others extended beyond that. He would go out of his way to help a stranger in need. Even if there wasn't a need, he would often surprise others with thoughtful gifts just to make them smile.

Dave touched many lives throughout his 85 years. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Dave was a loyal and dear friend to my son and me, and our family. He was so good natured, a Southern gentleman with a Louisiana accent to match. Dave was a deep thinker, open to everybody, and amused by the antics of humankind, in this mad, mad world. You were one of a kind, Dave, and we'll miss you!
