David Rakich Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral and Cremation Center on Mar. 1, 2025.
David M. Rakich, 80, of Avon, Ohio, formerly of Lorain, passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2025, after a lengthy illness. Born on December 1, 1944, to Milan and Stella Rakich, David dedicated his life to serving his community, cherishing his family, and embracing his many passions.
A proud member of the first graduating class of Admiral King High School in 1962, David went on to serve as a police officer for the Lorain Police Department for 25 years. His unwavering dedication to law enforcement was recognized in 1981 when he was honored as "Policeman of the Year." He also received the prestigious Purple Heart after sustaining a serious injury in the line of duty. Throughout his career, he demonstrated a deep commitment to his fellow officers, serving as President of the Policemen's Lodge.
Beyond law enforcement, David was a hardworking and devoted businessman. In 1982, alongside his wife, Barb, he owned and operated Giovanni's Pizza for 19 years, serving delicious meals and creating lasting friendships. Later, he continued his service to the community as a Bailiff for Judge Mark Betleski, a role he held for 10 years with integrity and professionalism.
David was an active and dedicated member of the Black River Masonic Lodge #786 in Lorain, where he held numerous leadership roles and organized their monthly dinners and Wednesday morning breakfasts. He was also a devoted member of the Hungarian Reformed Church, proud of his Hungarian heritage and deeply connected to his faith.
A man of many interests, David was an avid collector of sports cards, sports memorabilia, and Disney figurines. He had a lifelong love for Cleveland sports teams, The Ohio State Buckeyes, and, most importantly, watching his grandchildren play sports. A passionate student of American history, he enjoyed traveling to historical sites and spending time in nature, whether visiting the Metro Parks or simply watching wildlife from his backyard.
David's warm smile, infectious laughter, and larger-than-life personality made him a friend to all. He never met a stranger, and his kindness and humor left a lasting impact on everyone he met.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Barbara (née Bulloch); children, Kimberly (Dan) Lutz, Traci (Tom) Orlando, and Eric Rakich; grandchildren, Kristen Butchko, Steven Komar, Vince, David, and Lauren Orlando, Maddie, and Jake Rakich; sister, Audrey (Frank) Horvath; sister-in-law, Denise Rakich; and many cherished nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his baby boy, David M. Jr.; parents, Milan and Stella Rakich, his brother, Randy Rakich.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst, and again on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. in the funeral center, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park.

I had the privilege to work with Dave on the Lorain Police Department and more importantly I had the privilege of claiming Dave as a friend. Through all the years that I´ve known him ,in spite of all his health problems, Dave always had a smile on his face and a warm welcome for those around him. Dave considered his family as his greatest accomplishment. He will be missed by all that knew him. God speed brother.
