David L. Samp, age 87 passed away peacefully on December 7, 2025, at home surrounded by his loved ones. Dave was born on January 11, 1938 in Lake Mills, Iowa to Les and Vivian (Taylor) Samp. Dave attended Drake University where he received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (B.S. Pharm.); he worked as a registered pharmacist for 66 years. Up until his death, he enjoyed being a fill-in pharmacist at the Rochelle pharmacy. He married the love of his life, Mary Rathbun, on June 21, 1968 in Streator, Illinois. They were married for 57 years.
Dave was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose kindness humor and (occasional stubbornness) touched everyone he met. He enjoyed spending time in the outdoors; some of his happiest days were spent hunting with family and friends. Dave also cherished the camaraderie of his weekly poker games on Tuesday nights; a tradition he rarely missed. On Fridays, he could always be found having lunch with his close friends—another ritual that brought him great joy. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. He prioritized and loved attending his grandchildren’s extracurricular activities.
He was proceeded in death by his parents and a brother, Lowell Samp.
Dave is survived by his wife, Mary of Rochelle and six children: daughter, Tisha Moon and her fiancé Mike Monfils, son, Orrie (Linda) Samp, daughter, Courtney Spears and former son-in- law, Nick Spears all of Rochelle, IL, son, Errol (Johnies) Samp of Metamora, IL, son, Arron (Brittany) Samp of Palos Heights, IL and son, David Samp Jr. of Carlsbad, NM from his previous marriage; 15 grandchildren: Lyndsey (Tim), Lauren (Colton), Adam, Paige (Aaron), Garett, Wade, Kyler (Mason), Kayden (Austin), Kiersen (Keaton), Kallen, Riley, Reagan, Jordan, Jace, and Sarah (Kevin). He was blessed to have 14 great grandchildren who loved him unconditionally.
