David Cruz Sanchez, the life of every gathering and a protector, was called home on November 15, 2024, after a courageous health battle. Born October 21, 1960, in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Odilina "Nina" and Cruz Angel Sanchez, David spent 64 years making the world brighter, funnier, and unquestionably safer.
David is preceded in death by his parents, Nina and Cruz, and his beloved son, David Cruz Sanchez, Jr. (DJ). Left to carry on his legacy is his devoted wife of almost 28 years, Amanda "Mandi" Bacak Sanchez, his children: Natalie Nicole "Nicki" (Josh) George of New Braunfels, Dustin Matthew Sanchez, Alexa "Lexi" Paige Sanchez, and his grandson Evan Matthew Gutierrez of New Braunfels, all of whom were his pride and joy. David is also survived by sisters Sandra Ann (Tom) McWha of Robstown and Sylvia Irene Coronado (Omar) of Kerrville along with many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
David started his career with Harbor Construction before following in his father's footsteps and joining the Corpus Christi Police Department in 1990, where he spent 23 years serving his community with passion and bravery. Whether patrolling the streets, serving in Honor Guard, or a member of the SWAT team, David always brought dedication and a touch of humor to his work. His heart for others shone brightest in his role as a protector.
It was during his time as an officer that he met the love of his life, "Mandi-Lou," while she was working at Kenny Rogers Roasters. The day they met, he professed his honest intention to marry her, which they did in 1996. David and Amanda shared 29 years together. David spent those years loving her to the moon and back, without question.
Amanda and David share two beautiful children together, their adored son Dustin and precious daughter Lexi. Upon retirement, David returned to his love of building and project management and established SOL Construction, a respected business of 20 years, which gave him the opportunity to work side by side with his son. He cherished the time he shared with Dustin, working together and building a true friendship and a lifetime of memories.
Often referred to as "two peas in a pod," David and his youngest, Lexi had an unshakable bond, whether just hanging around the house, sharing jokes, or teaching her life skills.
David cherished memories with his daughter Nicki, affectionately known as "Chonnie," especially of their father-daughter dates and dancing to their favorite song, Neon Moon.
A lasting source of pride came from David's late son DJ. Between their shared passion for boxing and a strong work ethic, DJ's determination and spirit mirrored his father's.
Having a gift for making others feel like family, David treasured his "bonus" kids, whom he proudly took under his wing and treated as his own. When they needed him, he was always there offering fatherly wisdom, guidance and support.
David at his happiest surrounded by his loved ones. Whether he was floating the Frio River, hunting at the ranch, or hosting legendary Easter celebrations, he maximized every moment. Then there was "Rudy"-a shirtless photo of David created in support of prostate cancer awareness that became a party staple. David didn't like his photo taken, but "Rudy's" photo somehow made regular appearances.
David was many things-a devoted husband, an incredible father, a fearless officer, and a man who could make anyone laugh even in the toughest of times. He faced his final battle with unwavering courage, surrounded by the love of his family and the loyal support of his biggest companion, his weenie Lewie, who remained at his side.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and medical team who cared for David during his battle, especially to Jackie, Melissa, and Monica for their dedication and compassion during David's final days.
A visitation will take place on Sunday, November 24, 2024, promptly at 5:00 PM at Seaside Funeral Home Chapel located at 4357 Ocean Dr., Corpus Christi, TX, with a Rosary following at 6:00 PM. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Monday, November 25, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the Corpus Christi Cathedral located at 505 N Upper Broadway, Corpus Christi, TX, followed by a committal service at Seaside Memorial Park with police honors. Reception immediately following at Bar Under the Sun (BUS) located at 702 N. Chaparral St., Corpus Christi, TX.
David leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and stories that will be shared for generations. Whether we remember him as a devoted family man, a protector, or as "Rudy," one thing is certain-he made every moment count. Rest easy, David. You've earned it.
