David P. Sano, Sr., age 79, of Alliance, died at 12:20 p.m., January 22, 2011, at Astoria Skilled Nursing Center in Canton, Ohio. He was born June 4, 1931, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Michael and Mary (Yaske) Sano. David was a graduate of Ohio Northern University's Raabe School of Pharmacy. A member of the Phi Mu Delta Fraternity, he was also active in Ohio Northern University's choir. He was formerly a pharmacist at Northside Hospital in Youngstown and later a pharmacist at Alliance Community Hospital for 16 years. During those years he also served as an administrative assistant and in purchasing while at the hospital. He later ended his career at Peoples and Mount Union Square Pharmacies in 1994. David attended Union Avenue United Methodist Church, where he was formerly active on the finance committee, church counting committee, and a former usher. He was active in the Washington Ruritan Club for more than 40 years where he enjoyed his time serving as secretary and on the board of directors. David was also a member of Sulgrave Masonic Lodge #696 F&AM in Boardman, United Commercial Travelers and a former Alliance Kiwanis Club member. He was an avid golfer; enjoyed league bowling and biking trips with his children. David was a United States Army Veteran having served during the Korean War. Survivors include his wife, Helene A. (Brown) Sano whom he married November 24, 1956; and daughter, Mary Beth DelCalzo of Alliance. He dearly loved his four grandchildren, John and Sarah DelCalzo and Andrew and Patrick Sano; and is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sons, Thomas M. Sano and David P. Sano, Jr.; and a sister Sally Ferenchik. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Union Avenue United Methodist Church with Rev. Hoyte Wilhelm officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home. Interment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army Alliance Citadel, 57 W. Main St., Alliance, Ohio, 44601 or to the Alliance Food Pantry, 215 E. Market St., Alliance, Ohio 44601. Arrangements are by Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home, 75 S. Union Ave., Alliance, Ohio 44601.
