David Shively was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho, on June 7, 1940, to William O. and Lorene A. Shively. He spent his early years on their farm located off of Broadway in Idaho Falls. In his teenage years he lived a good part of the time at his friend's house in Blackfoot, Idaho.

After his return from the Army, he enrolled in college at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho, majoring in Forestry.

It was while he was at ISU he met his soulmate, Judith Winchell. They were married three years later in Elko, Nevada, at the Presbyterian Church. Returning to Idaho they made their home in Ada and Canyon counties. They had a house built on the outskirts of Middleton, Idaho, where they have lived for over fifty-three years.

After Dave retired, he became involved with the school districts in Middleton and Notus, Idaho, where he substitute taught or just helped in the Ag welding department. Many students were taught by him and became the master welders they are today. He even taught beginners in welding at BSU.

In 2014, Dave was awarded a State FFA Degree for his involvement with FFA in the Notus School District. Dave was a member of the Middleton/ Star American Legion where he was part of the Honor Guard and was a key person in fundraising to help Veterans.
