David Skinner Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home, Inc. - Columbus on Feb. 11, 2026.
David Ray Skinner, known affectionately as Dave to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026, in Columbus, Indiana. Born on June 12, 1941, the son of Chester Carl and Gertrude Dorothy McClintic Skinner, in Elizabethtown, Indiana. Dave married Janice Annette Wilson on January 15, 1961. Dave was married for 64 years until Janice passed on February 18, 2025. Dave was a man whose generosity and dedication to his community left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Dave's commitment to his work was evident in his impressive 42-year tenure at Cummins Engine Company, where he was not only a valued employee but also a friend to many. His work ethic extended beyond his professional life, as he spent 24 years mowing for various churches, most notably the Sanctuary of Columbus, Indiana. His service was a testament to his character, always willing to lend a hand, mowing for his sisters and a rural cemetery, never asking for anything in return. Generous is a word that barely scratches the surface when describing Dave. Dave was always willing to contribute to his community. It was said of Dave that his dream job was to be an American Farmer. To fulfill this desire, after working hours at Cummins, Dave could be found working on local farms during planting and harvest seasons in Bartholomew County. His love for tractors was more than just a pastime; it was a part of who he was. His impressive collection of 13 tractors, along with his various mowers, was a source of pride and joy. As a member of the Reddington Rear Wheelers Club, he shared his passion with fellow enthusiasts. Dave's leisure time was often spent in the company of friends at local eateries such as Skooters, Charlie Browns, and the Flow's Dinner, where he could be found enjoying his favorite cup of black coffee. Dave was a familiar face on the Sandcreek Advisory Board and a dedicated member of the Volunteer Fire Department in Elizabethtown, Indiana. His actions spoke louder than words, and his legacy is one of selflessness and service. Dave's life was one well-lived, full of purpose, and marked by the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, and his memory will continue to inspire acts of kindness and community spirit for years to come. This last statement sums Dave up well. Recently Dave received a Christmas card from a neighbor. Dave had been taking care of their yard and driveway. The card simply said, "You're not just a neighbor, you are our best friend." He is survived by his children, Susie (Johnny) Taylor, of Columbus, IN, Michael (Melea) Skinner, of Burnet, TX, and Judy (David) Walls, of Bloomington, IN; siblings, Marsha Skinner, and Mary (Tom) Aton, both of Columbus, IN; 7 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester Carl and Gertrude Dorothy McClintic Skinner; and a sister, Freida Stepp. A memorial service will be held for Dave will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 6, 2026 at The Sanctuary with Pastor Matthew Johnson officiating. Calling hours will be from 11:00 am until service time at 1:00pm at The Sanctuary. Dave will be laid to rest next to his loving wife, Janice, at Springer Cemetery immediately following the service.
