David Stay Obituary

Published by Legacy on Aug. 27, 2025.
David Theodore Stay of Madison Heights, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on August 22, 2025, at the age of 59.

Born on December 5, 1965, in Southfield, Michigan, David was the beloved son of Russell and Nancy Stay. He grew up in Royal Oak and graduated from Kimball High School in 1984. A talented and hardworking individual, David spent more than 20 years as a skilled carpenter before retiring in 2021. Earlier in life, he was also a certified mechanic, a trade he continued to enjoy well beyond his professional years.

David had a deep love for music-especially Rock 'n' Roll-and was an accomplished drummer who even played in a band. He was also a songwriter, channeling his creative energy into lyrics and rhythms that reflected his passion. His appreciation for classic cars was lifelong, and he proudly restored a 1963 Pontiac Catalina with his father, an experience he cherished deeply.

David was known for his nostalgic nature and sentimental heart. He never forgot a birthday, and he found joy in reflecting on the past, often sharing stories and memories with those close to him.

He is survived by his sister, Debbie (Pat) Johnson; his nieces, Rachel (Dustin) Hanson and Emily (Nick) Ward; and his great-niece and nephew, Alayna Hanson and John Patrick Ward. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Nancy Stay.

Funeral services will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in David's name to the American Cancer Society or Wounded Warrior Project.

David will be remembered for his creativity, his caring spirit, and the way he honored the people and memories he loved most.
