David L. Stevens, Jr. passed away peacefully from advanced prostate cancer on November 6, 2025 at home under the care of his devoted sister, Monica.

Born in Lexington, Kentucky, David was the son of David and Therese Stevens. He spent much of his childhood in Montclair, New Jersey. In 1989, David did what so many dream of but few have the courage to do-he quit his job and set out to travel the world. His adventures took him across many countries, and at one point, he and a close friend found themselves in Northwestern Australia, working on a banana plantation.

After returning to the United States, David lived in Southern California for many years and there he discovered a passion for darts and played regularly. He also became an avid golfer. When Dave eventually settled in Phoenix, Arizona he found he could beat the heat by going to the mountains to camp and fish and he was in his element. He enjoyed teaching others the joy of fishing.

In 2020, David moved to Wanaque, New Jersey to live with his sister, Monica. The two shared a special and deeply meaningful bond that grew even stronger. Though he was very sick in the last few weeks, David and Monica found greater peace, comfort, laughter, and strength in each other's company.

David never met a stranger-if you met Dave you were a friend. He was gregarious and a wonderful storyteller who had an adventurous spirit and a remarkable ability to make everyone around him feel welcome. Known for his humor and warmth, for him, there was no such thing as doing something halfway-he truly embodied the saying, "Go big or go home."

David had a deep love for animals and an impressive knowledge of them. Whether it was sharing a fun fact about a species or caring for a pet in need, his compassion for animals reflected the same kindness he showed toward people. In fact, there are more pictures of animals on his phone than there are of humans. In Wanaque, he kept himself busy by walking neighbor's dogs and became known as the 'Dog Whisperer'.

David is survived by his sister, Monica, and many friends both near and far. He was predeceased by his parents, David and Therese; and his siblings, Susan and Craig.

In keeping with the way David lived his life, all are welcome to gather at Scanlan's from 4–6 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11, 2025 for his Celebration of Life. Open sharing of stories about David will begin at 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Hubert's Animal Shelter. If you choose to send flowers, please avoid lilies due to an allergy.
