On February 10, 2026, David Hillman Stevens, age 81, an amazing man, unexpectedly passed away from natural causes at his home in
Millcreek, Utah, completing his earthly journey and returning to his eternal home.
Dave was born on August 13, 1944, in
Ogden, Utah, the first child of J Hillman and June Paul Stevens. At the time of his birth, his father was serving in the military and was far from home. Dave was joined by two sisters, Ann and Kathleen (Kathy). Later in life, after Dave had begun raising his own family, his parents divorced. His father remarried, welcoming a stepmother, Carol, and six stepsiblings into Dave's extended family. After Carol's passing, his father remarried again-coincidentally, to another woman named Carol.
From an early age, Dave's curiosity and creativity were evident. As a young man, he enjoyed making home movies, casting neighborhood friends in his productions. He made frequent trips to the library, checking out books and records. Through this, he developed a deep appreciation for literature, acting, and music-especially opera and musicals-that remained with him throughout his life. He delighted in listening to music at home, attending and performing in productions, and singing in the Utah Opera chorus and various choirs.
Dave also possessed a remarkable gift for languages. Fluent in a few and conversational in others, he delighted in connecting with people across cultures. His love of the wider world led him to travel extensively, visiting many countries and embracing new experiences.
He began his professional career as a schoolteacher, teaching in Washington State, Utah, and Germany. Later, he changed careers and joined AMSCO Windows as an inside salesman at the order desk. He dedicated more than 30 years to the company before retiring.
A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Dave served a mission as a young man in Finland for two and a half years. He developed a deep love for the Finnish people, culture, and language. Years later, he and his beloved wife returned to Finland to serve together for 18 months, further strengthening their affection for the country and its people.
On April 9, 1976, Dave was married to his eternal companion, Carol Griffeth, in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and shared adventure. They welcomed five children into their family: Natasha, Emily, Joshua, Susanna (Susie) and Amanda (Mandi), and created treasured memories on many camping trips filled with long drives and scenic hikes. Their family life was enriched through scripture study, Family Home Evenings, and lively game nights. Dave especially loved to play Scrabble.
He was active and healthy throughout his life, even running half marathons after retirement. Dave thrived on routine and order. Among his cherished rituals were reading magazines cover to cover, regular visits to the library, faithfully writing in and reviewing his journals, exercising at the Sports Mall, and taking long walks near his home.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Carol Griffeth Stevens; children Natasha Young (Tim), Emily Nelson (Tyler), Joshua Stevens (Morgan), Susie Anderson (Seth), and Mandi Janzen (Nick); 17 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; his sister Kathy Mower (Barry); and his stepsiblings Zan Burningham, David Paul, Pam Fullmer (Jon), Layne Paul (Vicki), Mark Paul (Patti), and Janna Paul.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Ann Lindsey; and many other beloved family members who surely welcomed him with joy upon his arrival home.
Dave will be remembered for his unwavering faith, keen intellect, disciplined life, love of music, and deep devotion to his family. His legacy of learning, service, and love will continue in the lives of all who knew him.
