David N.Townsend, 66, of Swampscott, passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at Lahey Hospital in Burlington, surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 20, 1959, he was the beloved son of the late Erland and Lois (Waite) Townsend.
A graduate of Dartmouth College and the Harvard Kennedy School, David served for 13 years as Vice President at Economics and Technology, Inc.(ETI) where he established a reputation in communications policy and regulatory consulting. In 1996, he founded David N.Townsend & Associates (DNTA), an international communications consulting firm that provided strategic guidance to governments and companies around the world. Over the course of a distinguished career spanning more than 80 countries, he advised national leaders and regulators, helping to strengthen communications infrastructure and expand global connectivity. David's work was always anchored by a profound commitment to universal access and the belief that connectivity is not a luxury, but a fundamental right. He published numerous papers, studies and reports and chapters on communications policy and economics. His family is working on honoring David's legacy by preparing his unfinished book manuscript, a comprehensive history of communications revolutions and a chronicle of his decades-long career for posthumous publication.
An extended network of colleagues mourn the loss of a truly unique individual– an exceptional professional, a tireless advocate, and a cherished mentor to many. To those who had the privilege to work alongside him, David was far more than a colleague; he became a beloved friend. His influence extended far beyond his professional accomplishments and lives on in the respect, gratitude and friendship of colleagues around the world.
David was a man of deep intellect and broad interests. He enjoyed going for long drives while listening to rock, jazz and the blues, hiking and navigating local trails and beyond, and spending time with his family and beloved pets Oshi, Coco and Birdy.
An avid reader, he eagerly explored wide ranging subjects across fiction and non-fiction. He relished many conversations with his son Jordan, ranging from world history, ideas about the past and the future, to the imaginative worlds they both loved. David delighted in sharing the stories of The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and Star Trek with his boys and later watching them come to life together on the screen. Whether diving into a graphic novel or exploring new subjects, David loved stories that transported him, and he leaves behind a legacy of wonder and adventure. His love for stories was matched only by his desire to see the world first hand. His greatest joy was being the "tour guide" for his family. He shared the world with his family, taking them on adventures across the globe and creating lasting memories.
Known for his wit and humor, David shared a special bond with his daughter Alexandra (Alex) with whom he co-hosted the podcast "My Comical Romance." Their show, which poked fun at vintage romance comics, allowed them to share their unique brand of humor with a wider audience.
David also carried a lifelong love of sports, inspired by his mother, and remained a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics and New England Patriots. One of his favorite memories was taking his son Riley to a New England Patriots game at Gillette Stadium, celebrating his son's growing love for sports.
David deeply valued his lifelong friendship with his childhood friends that accompanied him throughout life, especially the much anticipated annual getaways where their shared love of music, creativity, listening and learning brought them together year after year. A devoted bass guitarist, he found rhythm and connection in every note.
Alongside his love for music, David had a passion for writing; this inspired him to write a book titled Rock 'n' Roll and War and Peace. Another great passion, hiking local trails, was the motivation for taking his son Benjamin to go on a long hike that led to the publication of "Retracing Steps: An Exploration of Nature and History on the Massachusetts North Shore.
David is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Jennifer (Memije) Townsend, beloved children; Jordan Townsend, Alexandra Townsend, Benjamin Townsend and Riley Townsend. He is also survived by his brothers, Erland "Terry" Townsend III and his wife Barbara, and Stephen H.Townsend and his wife Jeannette, as well as his cousins Ricard Townsend, Erica (Waite) Clay and aunt Aileen (Gardner) Waite along with several nieces, nephews and godchildren.
David's warmth, intellect, humor and generosity will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at a later date. Details will be shared with family and friends once arrangements are finalized.
