Born on January 4th, 1942, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, David grew up in Dutchtown near Stillwater Minnesota. There he was surrounded by his family and friends who instilled a love of family and gardening. In 1960 David joined the US Army as a surveyor, serving overseas near Wertheim Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1963 at the rank of Specialist 5th class. Upon returning home to Minnesota, David moved to St. Paul taking a job with Chicago Northwestern Railroad. During this time, he met his future wife Barbara, and her 3 children, Lee Ann, Peter, and Marie. They married in 1964 and soon after were blessed with their first child Brenda. In 1968 a son David was born rounding out the family.
