David "Pete" Underwood, Sr. passed away on October 16, 2022, surrounded by his family. Pete was born on March 15, 1938, to the late Etta M. Underwood and Reverend Joe Brown in Chadbourn, NC. Pete migrated to Monticello, New York where he met the love of his life Ruby
and her family, and they were married for 42 years. Pete and Ruby have one son together (David Jr.) and 4 combined children (Jeffrey, Harriet, Patty, Alice).
Pete worked at Wechsler Contracting Company, Monticello, NY (where he was known as the"pool man") for over 30 years and retired from the company. He loved singing gospel and formed a gospel group called the Gospel Aires and they performed at different venues
throughout Sullivan County for several years. Upon retirement Pete and Ruby moved back to his hometown of Chadbourn, NC where they lived for over 10 years. He was bored in retirement, so he took a part-time job at the neighborhood Walmart as a "Greeter" until relocating to Atlanta to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren. Pete loved his colorful suits and vintage Cadillacs. His hobbies included watching his Dallas Cowboys, fishing with his sons and sons-in-law, spending time with his family and he loved to dance.
Pete is preceded in death by his Grandparents: Rubin and Josephine Benjamin; Parents: Etta M. Underwood and Reverend Joe Brown (Memory); Children: Larry Chestnut, Jeffery Snell and Harriet Agee-Armstead; Siblings: Bernice Mahoney, Joseph Brown, Randolph Brown, Robin
Cooper-Howard, Theresa Cooper and Ronnie Lee Cooper.
Pete leaves to cherish his memory: his wife of 42 years, Ruby Underwood of Snellville GA; Son, David Underwood, Jr. (Sinceore) of Ronkonkoma, NY; Daughters: Patty Shaw (Eric), Alice Stevens (Robert) of Snellville, GA; Siblings: Ronald A. Brown (Mary), Joanna Childress, Jerome
Brown, Leon Brown, Ada Mae Roseboro (Albert Lee) of Chadbourn, NC, Helen Batts (Joseph) of Valley Stream, NY, Diabella Pierce of El Paso, TX, Sandra Cooper of Brooklyn, NY, Melinda Cooper and Sheldon Cooper of Moncks Corner, SC, Carolyn Cooper of Crystal, MN, Ralph Cooper (Tonia) of Upper Marlboro, MD; (10) grandchildren, (7) great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 Noon Friday October 21, 2022 from the chapel of Byrd and Flanigan Funeral Home with Pastor Sam Nissen and Deacon Ralph Cooper officiating. Interment will follow in the Snellville Historical Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday October 21, 2022 from 11:00 - 12:00 at the funeral home.
