David Unruh Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 10, 2025.
David Alan Unruh, a resident of Washington Township for over 33 years and formerly of Bruce Township, passed away peacefully at his home on November 2, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, following a brief illness. He was 82 years old.
David was born on June 30, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, to Gustav and Wilhelmina "Minnie" (née Schneider) Unruh. He was raised in East Detroit (now Eastpointe) and graduated from East Detroit High School.
It was at a Sunday school class at Mount Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, at Six Mile and Gratiot in Detroit, where David met the love of his life, Judith (née Bender). The two quickly became inseparable and were married at that same church on June 26, 1965. This year marked their 60th wedding anniversary-a lifetime of love, faith, and partnership spent raising their two children and navigating life's blessings and challenges together.
Over the years, David and Judith made their homes in several southeast Michigan communities, including Detroit's west side, Madison Heights, Sterling Heights, and Bruce Township for a decade, before settling in Washington.
David maintained a strong Lutheran faith throughout his life. He was a fantastic, devoted husband, father, and son, whose sense of responsibility and love for family shaped everything he did. Having lost his father at the age of ten, David understood the importance of being present for his own children and worked tirelessly to provide for them. He built a 30-year career as a draftsman in the automotive industry and later spent ten years working on a horse farm-a role he truly loved, finding great joy in caring for the horses.
At home, David's life was centered around his family. He cherished time spent together and enjoyed simple pleasures like relaxing in the garden, woodworking, and tending to his beloved pet dogs and cats over the years. His handcrafted woodworking pieces became treasured gifts among family and friends. David and Judith also shared a passion for family history, often traveling to research their genealogy and trace their roots.
David is survived by his beloved wife, Judith Unruh; his children, Scott Unruh and Matthew (Wendy) Unruh; and his grandchildren, Michael Unruh, Kyle (Nayeli) Unruh, Zachary Unruh, Joshua Unruh, Levi Unruh, and Faith Unruh. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Barbara Unruh; his niece, Susan Shargabian; and his nephew, Christopher Unruh.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Gustav and Minnie Unruh; and his brother, Raymond Unruh.
Funeral services will be private. A memorial service to celebrate David's life may be held in the future.
