David Lee VanWinkle (Boogie, Bullwinkle, Papa) age 63 left this earth on February 6, 2025.He was born in Mtn View, MO on May 26, 1961 to James (Jim) VanWinkle and Phyllis (Vanover) VanWinkle.
He graduated from high school at Winona High in 1979. He met the love of his life, Becky Patterson, in February of 1979. After a few months and David stealing her brown pinto and sisters, later they became a couple. On July 11, 1981 they stood in front of family and friends and united as one in marriage and born unto this union were three children, Michelle Ann, James Oliver, and Chelsie Marie.
His work ethic was evident not only in his job but also in his personal life. Throughout the years he drove a truck across the country, he could operate any kind of heavy equipment ever made, he was a great mechanic and could fix just about everything. He loved to pass along his knowledge to his kids and grandkids whether they asked for it or not. In the last 11 years he worked for BNSF. He loved to hunt deer and go fishing whenever he could. His greatest love of all was his wife, children and grandchildren. His favorite memories involved taking his grandsons hunting at Piedmont, camping on the river and side by side riding with family, and his 2-week summer vacations with his 2 grandbabies from the city. Our favorite pastime was gathering on Sunday morning for breakfast cooked with love by David. David and Becky's love story is a fairytale- pure, effortless and magical. Just two kids falling in love and building an amazing life.
David didn't care for the beach, but he'd load up that truck and sit out under an umbrella next to Becky just to make her happy. Their love shaped their children's lives helping them feel safe, valued and loved no matter what and will live on forever.
He was preceded in death by his father James (Jim) VanWinkle, his father and mother in law Oliver and Ruth Patterson, his sister in law Judy Ann Patterson, his brothers in law Mike and Gene Patterson, his brother Dennis VanWinkle and his 4 angel grand babies.
He is survived by his loving wife and forever best friend Becky VanWinkle, his oldest daughter Shelly and Ronnie Williams of Overland Park, KS, his only son Jamie and Ashley VanWinkle of Winona, MO, and his youngest Chelsie and Michael John Rector of Winona, MO. his grandchildren Kaiden, Kamden, Madelyn, Graham, Gauge, Karlee, and Chase. His sister in law Anna Patterson and Larry Stacy of Blue Eye, MO, and sister in law Sarah Schweighauser of Springfield, MO, his mother Phyllis Vermillion of Mtn. View, MO. his sisters and brothers Kathy Baker, Joanna Metzler, and Bill VanWinkle all of West Plains, MO and Darrel VanWinkle of Winona, MO, sisters-in-laws Theresa Patterson and Jann Jones, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
He left a big hole in the family and some great big steel toe boots to fill. He will be greatly missed.
Services will be at 11:00am Monday, February 10, 2025 at the Oak Grove church in Birch Tree, MO with Bro. Jeff Brake officiating. Visitation will be 10-11:00 Monday at the church. Pallbearers will be Rick VanWinkle, Harold VanWinkle, James Patterson, D.J. Schweighauser Roger Carpenter and Keith Patterson.
