David Jon Wesselhoff was born in
Moline, IL on December 28, 1957 to Nancy (Dingler) Wesselhoff and John "Jack" Wesselhoff. He attended grammar school in
DeKalb, IL and was a 1976 DHS graduate.
He attended Iowa State University in the late 1970's however, it was his move to San Diego in the early 1980's that eventually saw him through his Bachelor's Degree and ultimately his Master's Degree in Learning Design and Technology from San Diego State University. Upon earning his Master's, he achieved his ultimate goal of becoming an Instructional Designer.
David worked the restaurant industry in the 1980's and 1990's in San Diego, starting out in entry level jobs such as bussing and dishwashing, quickly earning his way to restaurant management at a Carlos Murphy's.
Once degreed, David became a Training & Development Program Manager for Jack in the Box Restaurants in which he took great pride writing training manuals and providing on-site employee training at multiple locations. In 2007 David relocated from San Diego, CA to
Jacksonville, FL to be closer to family. He soon gained fulfilling roles in instructional design in which he thrived. David found his passion in this industry and in the words of his dear co-worker and friend, Barb, "(he was) one of the best Instructional Designers I've ever worked with."
David was a private, quiet, and mild-mannered individual however, those who knew him personally would be quick to tell you about his witty and very playful sense of humor. In contrast to his quiet nature, David enthusiastically shared stories of his rambunctious young adulthood in San Diego. He delighted in telling the stories of those days.
David was extremely generous in spirit, once gifting a co-worker with cancer one-hundred hours of his own personal time off. It was noted that he was willing to gift all of his PTO, but his corporation had a hundred hour gifting policy. Upon the death of his brother Bill, David played a supportive role to his niece in her grief and was instrumental in helping with arrangements. Simply put, David had a heart of gold.
Those who knew David understood his voracious appetite for reading and his affinity for a multitude of genres. Being a history buff, David gravitated toward historical novels, texts, and historical fiction. He enjoyed science fiction, mysteries, true-crime, and sports novels as well. One of his great pastimes was swapping books with close family and friends.
David is survived by his beloved pup, Buford; his niece Heather Wesselhoff (Ethan) Bakken; great-niece Katherine; dear friend, Barb (Jim) Barker; cousins, Mazie and Sam Ruzic, Ben (Caryn) Ruzic, Chris Ruzic; Aunt Carol (Bob) Jerman; and friends and coworkers who have cared for him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Nancy Wesselhoff; his brother, Bill Wesselhoff; his brother, Greg Wesselhoff; and his beloved pet, Scruffy.
A small private gathering of close friends and family will be held at a later date.
