David Witzman, 76, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2025, in Memphis, Tennessee, with his devoted wife, Mary Margaret (Manahan) Witzman, by his side. David was born on June 21, 1948, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to the late Peter Witzman and June (Walker) Witzman. Raised with strong values and an unwavering dedication to family, David grew to be a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
After enlisting in the United States Army in February of 1968, David honorably served his country during a tour in Vietnam. For his gallantry and service, he earned a National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal with four bronze service stars, a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and a Bronze Star. On September 26, 1970, David married the love of his life, Mary Margaret Manahan, and their remarkable 54-year marriage remains an enduring testament to their commitment and devotion.
David's passion for life was evident in his enthusiasm for all Chicago sports teams-save for the White Sox-his love of golfing, his fondness for classic rock music, and his legendary poker nights. In 1985, he moved his family to Memphis, Tennessee, to further his career with the United States Aviation Insurance Group, showcasing his deep commitment to providing for his loved ones. A quiet rock of strength, David always placed family first, earning the admiration and gratitude of all who knew him.
David is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Margaret; his daughter, Gretchen Stanton, and her husband, Eric; his sons, Michael and Sean; and his cherished grandchildren, Mary Grace Wiedt, Walker Wiedt, Carter Stanton, and Brady Stanton. He also leaves behind his dear sister, Merry Beth ("Boo") Flynn, as well as several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and extended family. He rejoins his parents, Peter and June, in eternal rest.
A visitation will be held on Friday, January 31, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, located at 5668 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38119.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 1, at 10:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 8151 Poplar Avenue, Germantown, TN 38138. A private burial will follow at the West Tennessee State Veteran's Cemetery.
