David Young Obituary

Dave was born in Burlington, VT on July 4, 1941, to Cecila and James Young. Cecelia was a Canadian citizen and raised on a maple sugar farm in Vermont and James was a career Army serviceman stationed at Ft. Ethan Allen, VT. Together they raised four boys and a girl. David

was the oldest.

Dave joined the Navy in 1959 and served on a submarine, aircraft carrier, mine sweeper and

a tank landing ship. He served in Vietnam and earned a Combat Action Ribbon as a 50 Caliber

Machine Gunner as his General Quarters Assignment. His primary Navy assignment was as a

Radioman. He was a High-speed Morse Code Operator and Communications System Controller.

His shore duty assignments were Ethiopia, Hawaii, Okinawa and Norfolk VA. David retired from the military in 1981, after serving 22 years. In 1982 he attended courses at the Electronic

Computer Programming Institute in Norfolk, VA.

Dave then took a job with Fairchild Space and Defense in Germantown, MD. He worked on the Hubble Space Telescope Communications and Data Handling module, F-14 aircraft weapon

System, Boeing 747 and 767 hydraulic control system and other space hardware components.

He retired from Fairchild after 22 years.

Dave met his wife, Alice while on shore duty in Hawaii. She was an Army librarian at Schofield

Barracks. A co-worker and his wife introduced him to Alice. It took some time for Alice to decide Dave had possibilities. She was going to introduce him to a local girl she knew but then changed her mind. After a 6th month courtship, they got married at Pearl Harbor Naval Station,

HI in 1972.

In 1985, Dave and Alice finished the installation of a Hearthstone log house and this became

their permanent home in Frederick. Dave's brother Michael, was instrumental in doing all the carpentry work once the logs were laid. After 40 years, things have held up well.

After a few years, Dave built a ham radio shack on their property and buried a time capsule beneath its foundation. He enjoyed connecting with people all over the world.

Dave was a very positive thinker and believed there was a bright side to every situation. He enjoyed telling tall tales which he made sound believable. Dave made friends very easily and would often leave a project he was working on to help a friend.

Dave was a true dog lover. He thought everyone should have a dog to love. He used to spend time walking his Golden Retrievers and often meeting a friend and his French bulldog. Dave liked to stop at Nola's downtown to chat and enjoy a cup of coffee.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Pamela Kennedy (Patrick), brothers: Michael (Margaret), Daniel (Linda) and Patrick (Nuch).

Yesterday

I am sending condolences to Alice and family. I was briefly acquainted with Dave when I worked at Fairchild for a few summers when off from teaching school. Dave was a good person, and what a character he was (one who was gifted with great humor!) May your memories be a blessing,

I am so sorry to hear about Dave passing. He was a good man and I enjoyed my time I got to spend with Dave at Fairchild. His stories were a highlight of many days. He will be sadly missed. My condolences to the family.
