Dean Altenhofen Sr MD Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 8, 2025.
Pensacola - Beloved Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, and Physician passed away unexpectedly on November 5, 2025, in Kennesaw, GA.

He was born on May 11, 1957, in Washington, D.C., to the late Clair and Gazelle Altenhofen. He is survived by his children: Daphanie (Kevin), Dean (Sydney), Brandi (Timothy), Megan (Barton), Devin (Dennis), and Dylan; his six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was the eldest of eight children and is survived by six sisters and a brother.

He lived a full life marked by dedication to his country, family, and his medical career as an OB/GYN. For forty years, he cared for his patients and delivered new life into the world. This was his greatest joy, as he loved his work and dedicated his life to it.

After graduating from high school, he joined the USAF, where he served for four years. He attended college at Clemson University and the University of South Carolina, where he earned his medical degree. He completed his residency in Pensacola, FL, where he established his private practice, bringing thousands of babies into this world, cared for their mothers and countless women throughout his career.

He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. He was celebrated with a private family memorial and laid to rest at Barrancas National Cemetery.

Dad always said he was just resting his eyes, not sleeping. Now you can sleep Dad. Rest easy

Dr. Altenhofen was the on call doctor when I lost my first child, he conducted the DNC at the hospital, and I'll never for get what he said to me! "You need a doctor like me who's a high risk pregnancy doctor" and from that moment, he became my OB/GYN and help me successfully deliver my daughters, Charity and Christian "Chrissy". I am forever grateful to the man he was, and the doctor of integrity he was in his field! He will be missed! Rest well Doctor Altenhofen until that great day when Jesus The Christ returns!

I´m so heartbroken! Dr. Altenhofen delivered both of my children in 1999 and 2002. I can remember when I had my first one. I told him I wanted to get my you know what tied. He said, wouldn´t your daughter like a brother(even though she had a brother(different mom) I was like No. 3 years later, Im sitting in the waiting room and he comes in smiling and says, ahhhh yes yes. I´ll never forget it. He made me feel like I was his only patient. I just buried my sister today so this is a double whammy for me. Thank you Dr. Altenhofen and may you both. Rest in Jesus, Stacey Griffin

Dr. A delivered me and all four of my siblings in 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2005. He´s been my mom´s only doctor since then and up to his retirement. We are devastated to hear about his loss. Dr A was there for my parents happiest memories and toughest times. In 2012 my grandmother was having surgery and Dr A ran into my parents in the waiting room. He dropped everything to go and check on her for them. My mom always says they don´t make them like they used and Dr Altenhofen was the "used to." Our deepest condolences to his family. He spoke so highly of y´all for the 30+ years he knew my parents.

He was my Dr but he always made me feel like I was apart of his family. When I had my daughter (kiara she know 27yrs). I was a high risk and could have lost my life and she was a twin.we didn't know until I had her by c-section that 2 babies. After he delivered the babies I had 2 stay in the hospital because I lost a lot of blood. He never left my side, I had her at 6:18 AM in the middle of the night that same day smuch I was going under and I DIDN'T know it. He came held my hand and staying there with me to make sure me and my baby was okay. I never had a Dr care for me like that before. Or after that. He will be missed. R.I.P. DR.A. and THANK YOU. Job well done ..and done it with . DR..A...YOU WILL BE MISS

Can´t believe you have left this world and now you have seen the face of Jesus. I was 27 years old and you were 31 when I started working for you. 36 years later I got to watch you bring so many children into this world and help out so many women too! When you work for someone as long as Chris ( his secretary) and myself you become like a brother to us. We will miss you! Praying for peace and understanding for the whole family.

I worked at sacred for 26 years and went to many deliveries with Dr Altenhofen. He delivered my grandbabies and took excellent care of my daughter. He always made a point of asking about me when my daughter went in for appointments. Such a caring , compassionate man. You will be missed !

Dr. Altenhofen was my doctor for nearly a decade. He delivered 2 of my 3 babies and kept me alive when I suffered from SEVERE pre-eclampsia with one of my births. He was no nonsense, always had a smile on his face, and never judged anyone for anything. I was so bummed when he retired. My mom (former nicu nurse) worked with him at Sacred for a couple decades. He always asked about her when he saw me. Doc, you will be missed. Rest easy in God's arms. My sincerest condolences to his family.

Dr. Altenhofen delivered 3 of my 4 boys in 2003, 2007 and 2013 and had I known about him with my first I sure would have been a patient then too because he was AMAZING! He had the best bedside manor of any doctor I've ever had. He truly cared for his patients. He listened and really took time with them. My heart goes out to his loved ones and I will keep you all in my prayers.
