Dean Cole Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jones Funeral Home - Winchester on Mar. 19, 2026.
Lt. Colonel Dean E. Cole, USAF (Ret.), born on August 5, 1947, in Omaha, NE, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2026, after a courageous and grace-filled battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family, whose love, admiration, and gratitude for him will endure for generations.

He lived a life defined by service, integrity, and deep compassion. A proud member of the United States Air Force, he served two tours in Vietnam and went on to become a highly respected B-52 flight instructor. His 23 years of steady leadership, calm presence, and unwavering commitment to his fellow airmen left a lasting impact on all who served alongside him.

Following his distinguished military career, he continued his lifelong pursuit of understanding the human spirit. He earned his social work license and served as a Social Worker in Greene County, Ohio, before completing his Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Psychology. He also loved giving back to his community through volunteer work, offering his time, insight, and resources wherever they were needed. His work reflected his belief in the dignity and potential of every person he encountered.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Suzanne McIlwee Cole, with whom he shared many years of marriage and raised their two children. He is survived by his wife, Kappy, his devoted partner in life for the past 7 years; his children, Matthew (Nikki) and Lisa (Tami); and his grandchildren, Hunsley, Murphy, and Fisher. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Ann (John), and his brother, Paul (Carol). In addition, he is survived by his stepchildren, Amy, Jeffrey, and Katy. He was an extraordinary father and grandfather, known for his gentle humor, his steady encouragement, and the pride he carried for his family.

Those who knew him will remember his integrity, his warmth, and the way he made every person feel seen and valued. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched through his service, his work, and his love.

A celebration of his life will be held on March 28th at Jones Funeral Home in Winchester, VA. The service will take place from 12:00–1:00 PM, followed by a gathering from 1:00–2:00 PM at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his name to Blue Ridge Hospice in Winchester, VA, whose compassionate care supported him and his loved ones.
