Deathrice Gray Obituary

Deathrice Dwayne Gray Sr., born Aug. 1, 1973, in Chicago, Illinois, peacefully passed away Jan. 26, 2026, while residing in Pennsylvania. He was raised between Chicago and Kentucky, places that shaped his strength, loyalty, and deep love for family.

Deathrice was a devoted father whose children were his heart and soul. He leaves behind his beloved daughter, Ieshia Gray, and his sons, Casimir Vanburen and Deathrice Gray Jr. He shared an especially close and unbreakable bond with his only grandson, Darnell Jackson Jr., whom he loved dearly, as well as his two granddaughters, Ay'lani and Ma'kani Vanburen. His love for his children and grandchildren defined who he was.

He is also survived by his mother, Marie Foster; stepmother, Teresa Morton; sister, Chaquitta Boesche; brothers, Charles Gray Jr., Robert Gray, Sean Foster, and Reginald Davis; and his cherished little cousin, Gianna Gray. Deathrice will be deeply missed by his many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and loved ones.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Gray Sr.; his brother, Major Gray; and his grandparents, Paul and Dorothy Gray. In honor of his grandfather, Paul — a proud World War II veteran who was injured in service and received numerous military awards — Deathrice carried forward the same bravery, strength, and resilience throughout his life.

After earning his GED, Deathrice spent the majority of his working years alongside his father, training, feeding, and caring for horses, a bond and profession that brought him great pride. He was also a dedicated basketball coach to his daughter, always present, encouraging, and supportive.

A die-hard sports fan, Deathrice proudly cheered for the Chicago Cubs, the Chicago Bears, and the Kentucky Wildcats. In his free time, he enjoyed going to the races, taking trips to the casino, and traveling. Above all, he cherished spending time with his children, grandchildren, and extended family, creating memories that will live on forever.

A viewing will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at Kniffen O'Malley Leffler Funeral Home, 465 S. Main St., Wilkes-Barre.
