Very sorry to hear about her. My mother, Anne Lee, was her godmother and I used to wear hers and Dianne´s hand me down clothes when I was little.

So sorry to hear about Judge Batts' demise. She was an excellent legal scholar as well as an excellent human being with an understanding of legal issues but human issues as well.

At some point during our first year of law school at Fordham a few of us had privately nicknamed Professor Batts "Debbie Deb". One day, one of the students was feeling particularly happy to see her and he blurted out "Debbie Deb!" Those of us within earshot froze...cringing internally...stunned that he had revealed our secret nickname. Next thing, Professor Batts' face was completely enveloped by that amazing smile of hers and, with that, the (no longer secret) name became official. She was as kind and inspirational as she was cool. And to me, she was the coolest professor ever. RIP Debbie Deb.

Debbie and I were house residents/tutors at Radcliffe way back when. Debbie was at Coggeshall and I was down the street at 60 Walker. Although she was at the Law School and I walked in the opposite direction to the Yard, we had terrific interactions and some good laughs from time to time. I also saw her a few times in New York early in her corporate career. I had always hoped our paths would cross again, but alas, no. She will always live vividly in my memory. What accomplishments and what a superb human being! To her family, friends and colleagues, please accept my deepest condolences. You were so fortunate to have her in your lives.

I did not know her as the outstanding jurist that she was. i knew her as the cheerful always smiling neighbor. I have been so sad-I will miss you. We all will miss you.

Deborah was one of the leading lights in our Harvard Law School Class. It was a most memorable honor for me to be present as her portrait was unveiled at the Law School in 2001. Her remarkable career and her warmth and compassion will long be remembered by all who knew her. May her memory be a blessing for all of us who were blessed to know and admire her.
